Ridiculous topic, but there must be some kind of science to it.
Off the top of my head I say #2.

I've always held to the theory that the 7th track is the best.

7th track: is that because it's the start of side 2 for many LPs? Does that rule apply generally or just to PW?

Track 8 works too. I made a killer mix last year featuring only songs that are the 8th track on their respective albums.
Examples include: "Lost in the Supermarket" - The Clash "We May Be The Ones" - Paul "Friday Night Is Killing Me" - Bash & Pop "God Only Knows" - Beach Boys "What's Golden" - Jurassic 5
etc...

I've always held to the theory that the 7th track is the best. Good theory. "Unsatisfied", "Bastards Of Young", "Within Your Reach", "Eyes Like Sparks", all 7's. Then again so is "Silver Naked Ladies"...

Making a mix based on track order..something I've never considered but sounds like a fun experiment. Did you pick out the 20 CDs w/out looking what track 8 might be? And without doing the research, I might pick the last track. Seems they are sometimes picked to sum up the mood of the album.

"they miss her back down on the farm, and the money goes straight to her arm..."
So where is the rest of that song??!! He gave us snippets of things on 49:00 of your Life, but knowing him, he probably erased over it all those other tunes after sequencing it for 49:00 because he ran out of ADAT tapes!
Still can't believe he records over his stuff. I'd have to hope he didn't think they were anything worthy of consumption by the fan base. I mean, if there were things he was really proud of, I gotta think he's not erasing over that stuff but transferring it to a CD or somewhere and keeping a copy of it
