This is great. I have no idea, It sounds to me like "former whore she's peeing on ajax". I have no idea what this would mean. I can just imagine Paul reading this message board, amused as hell at our efforts to decipher his lyrics.

Bleach that turns blue when exposed to urine? (Or is it pink?) Having violent flashbacks to the crushed rat brain debate.

and i know he's probably yelling "cock sure" but man does it sound like "cock show" (another g'n'r reference?)
and i may have a breakthrough on the perplexing "peeing on ajax" line. what if, just what if he's saying: "peeing on age X" ?

Is "gun shy" shorthand for being reticent about suicide? gun shy, adj. frightened by the sound of a gun firing. From Websterberg's dictionary. It is also a movie with Sandra Bullock and Liam Nissan and that means absolutely nothing.

There's only so may good two-word phrases. Tim Rogers of You Am I beat Westerberg to "spit polish." I still say suicide lurks here, maybe as a second or third meaning.

Turns out the Greek hero Ajax commited suicide ... the plot thickens
Ajax was the son of Telamon. He was a Trojan War hero on the side of the Greeks. When Achilles was killed, his armor was to be awarded to the next greatest Greek hero. Ajax thought it should go to him. Ajax went mad and tried to kill his comrades when the armor was awarded to Odysseus, instead. Athena intervened by making Ajax think cattle were his former allies. When Ajax realized he had slaughtered the herd, he committed suicide as his only honorable end.
Also Ajax is a popular name for soccer teams the world over.

What would we ever do without google?

What would we ever do without google? It can lead you pretty far astray, or does me anyway. In "Pine Box" he mentions Iwo Jima, but with Google's help I found a Japanese author with a similar-sounding name who, as it happens, had commited hari-kari. As soon as suicide comes up, I always think it's a lock, no matter how obscure. On the "peeing on Ajax" hunt, I found a scientific research paper that seemed to be promoting the use of an Ajax product and other inexpensive materials to test urine for excess cyanide in the body. Apparently this is needed in some parts of Africa where their diet includes an obscure plant that contains slight amounts of cyanide. Then there are those soccer teams called Ajax. Some of them do get peed on occasionally by raucous fans in places like Italy. I thought that was pretty far afield for Westerberg to reference ... until the Rome show anyway.

Are you serious? Because that doesn't sound like something the average person would know without googling, and Paul doesn't strike me as a big googler.

Oh my lord I think at this point in time, if I ever got the opportunity to ask Paul another question, it would definitely be what the hell this line IS and what the hell he meant. If he mentions African tribes and cyanide...

Are you serious? Because that doesn't sound like something the average person would know without googling, and Paul doesn't strike me as a big googler. "Pine Box" was just out and no one had transcribed the lyrics yet, so I was giving it a whack. No, I don't think he was referencing a Japanese author, but the man does read, so I thought it was a (distant) possibility. Until someone else said it was Iwo Jima, I was really stumped.
