WHAT ABOUT MINE? When you cried as a little baby Mom and daddy let you cry Thought that that was the best way, maybe To make you grow all strong inside Now that you're older You need someone's shoulder What about mine? Growin' up, your mind was closed for repairs for a long, long time You could feel the loneliness in your hairstyle, just like mine Now that you're grown up Still need that shoulder What the hell are you waitin' for? It's mine I promise not to chase you Only to embrace you I promise not to bug you Only just to hug you all night When you was a little baby Mom and dad they let you cry They thought that's the best way, maybe To make you all strong inside Were they wrong? Yes Mine What about mine?

This one is certainly one of my favorites on the album. Great melody, great lyrics...everything just feels right about this one. A should-be hit that won't be... Paul throws in the off-kilter "were they wrong? yes" part that almost sounds like a backwards message just to keep you on your toes and keep the tune from being the perfect pop song.

This one has grown quite a bit on me. I see the song being about his boy - probably isn't but it makes for a nice ode to his son.

I don't think it can be about his son: When you cried as a little baby Mom and daddy let you cry Thought that that was the best way, maybe To make you grow all strong inside Now that you're older You need someone's shoulder What about mine? Growin' up, your mind was closed for repairs for a long, long time You could feel the loneliness in your hairstyle, just like mine I don't think he's referring to himself as the parent who let the baby cry...I mean his kid is only 6 so would you really refer to a 6 year old as "Growin' up, your mind was closed for repairs for a long, long time"? I think this is referring to an adult person who is having trouble letting someone else get close to them because of childhood issue (see: The vices of the parents soon reveal themsleves in the sickness of the child) $0.02

Maybe its for a sister or brother -- there's something completely sincere about it.

I don't think it can be about his son I agree for the song as whole, though the very last "What about mine" could be heard as "what about my kid? ... am I gonna let him cry? no"

You are probably right and I agree that the above lyric doesn't exact jibe with the the son theory but we don't know if his son had any emotional difficulties or something like that I can see Paul second guessing their parenting technique as well as seeing his son as grown up in some ways. That's the glory of PW - it could conceivably several meanings.

Now I'm hearing the final "What about mine?"s as referring to Paul's or the singer's parents, as opposed to the parents of the person who the song is addressed to.
Also, this part: "Still need that shoulder What the hell are you waitin' for? It's mine"
always reminds me of:
"What's taking so goddamn long? You call that gone?"

I love the whimsical spoken "Were they" wrong "Yes".
For something similar check out Harry Nillson's "So Long Dad" on Nillson sings Newman (a song that would be a great cover for Paul to do!).
