Chris Riemenschneider, the local MPLS rock critic, took PW to task saying some recent lyrics were too much like undigested lines from notebooks thrown together at random.
I see the point, but some songs work because of it. Can't Hardly Wait (PTMM version) is one: the image of the flashing light through the curtain sort of stands alone, with no apparent connection to the rest.
But I guess that's poetry for ya.

Hey, that's a key line, and totally connected IMO: There's light (life, warmth) behind those drapes, but the singer is on the outside, lonely, homesick, alienated, catching a glimpse of someone else's comfort and joy, yearning for his own .... blah, blah, blah, I ramble, but still I think it's a classic road image, and completely central -- as you say, makes the song work.

If CFMT (the movie) is any indication, then that's exactly what they are. I see the point, but some songs work because of it. It's the line that cements the "on the road" visual in my mind. It should resonate with anyone who's spent some nights in a roadside motel.

I had a different visual, of being on a tour bus that is driving along at night, with the curtains being on the bus windows and the lights flashing are street lights that flash as the bus moves past them...and sleeping on the bus sounds even more miserable than a roudside motel.
