I was listening the version from the Jools Holland show in '99, and thought it sounded like "right brain", not "rat's brain" just to further confuse things. Completely unrelated, I came across the word Ratsbane the other day. Kind of a stretch but ratsbane=rat poison=poison=pills? hmmmm...
Ok, so we have: fingernails/bacon war/words cerebral/ so we will rats brain/ right brain
next!

You forgot gassed-up casket/gassed the casket I think you might be the only one confused about that lyric.

I am confused about a lot of things here lately, like Paul writing What A Day with Carole King, and which early Mats songs are Paul solo efforts. But I'm putting together an army to wage war over that World Class Fad lyric. First thing we're gonna do is storm the Edina Country Club.

First thing we're gonna do is storm the Edina Country Club. Make sure the car's gassed up before you drive down there.

we might take the bus, but while we're on the topic of driving:
if it's not too personal, did Paul always not drive, or when did he become a non-driver? someone explained the "Makin Me Go" lyric "I won't be a-drivin' that's for sure" that way. I was thinking there was a driving song on the first album, but actually he was just "Takin a Ride," which I'm not sure was him driving. And he wants to have "Someone Take the Wheel."

He doesn't have a driver's license. He's said that he had to make an early choice between drinking and driving. We all know which one he picked.

...while we're on the topic of driving: if it's not too personal, did Paul always not drive, or when did he become a non-driver?" In Our Band Could Be Your Life, it's mentions that Jesperson did all the driving because nobody in the band had a DL. Seems to suggest Paul's never been a driver.

In some interview with Tommy he said that in the Mats, only Chris got a license, and that Paul was going for one early on but hit someone on a bike.

LA Times - June 12th, 1993
"I'm going to go for something low-buck, because I anticipate a few fenders hitting things," said the skinny rocker, who wears his hair in a spiky rooster 'do that's about halfway between Rod Stewart and Johnny Rotten. Back in Minnesota, Stinson was able to get around on his hometown's mass transit (immortalized in the Replacements song, "Kiss Me on the Bus" ) or on a bicycle. "Paul (Westerberg) and I do not drive. He started to learn when he was in school, but I think he hit someone on a bike" and gave up. "It's my big adventure," Stinson said of his decision to leave Minneapolis about a month ago and move into his girlfriend's apartment in Hollywood. "I don't feel much connection to the last 10 years now that I'm here. I feel I've walked away from it quite far."

I guess it really is "Crushed rat's brain." That's what all the lyric sites say. It still sounds like "Crushed fried brain" to me.

Paul's interests no no bounds. "Crushed rat brain" is a common neuroscience research medium.
"Previous studies have shown that motoneuron functional properties depend on nerve-muscle interactions. However, the mechanisms for this dependence remain unknown. Our investigation of this issue began with in vivo studies of the early effects of axotomy on physiological properties of medial gastrocnemius (MG) motoneurons in adult female Wistar rats. Motoneuron properties and synaptic potentials were recorded intracellularly from two groups of Nembutal-anesthetized rats: one with nerves untreated (n=10), the other with the MG muscle nerve crushed 5 days prior to recording (n=2). Measurements from MG motoneurons included rheobase current, after-hyperpolarization decay, input resistance, sag ratio, conduction velocity, and excitatory post-synaptic potentials (EPSP) produced by group I electrical stimulation of the homonymous (MG) and heteronymous (lateral gastrocnemius-soleus) muscle nerves."

Nice transcription of his scat singing off one of the better boots from the Suicaine tour, Johns Hopkins Performance Hall 7/33/99!
