I have some serious doubts as to whether this is anywhere near correct, maybe someone with better ears can help me make this part out: Used to be sober but a hanging judge??? Now the law went and left me flat You better go around me… Thinkin’ I’m bad?? knock knockin’ em back Knock knockin’ em back

Used to be sober but a hanging judge??? Now the law went and left me flat I think that is pretty close - Used to be as sober as a hanging judge Now the law has went and left me flat Kind of a play on the expression "sober as a judge"?

The chorus is a variation of the following. The second time through he says this for sure:
I used to be as sober as a hanging judge Now the law has went and left me flat You better go around baby now I won't budge I'm thinking I'm bad Knock knocking 'em back
I have the rest of the lyrics if you want 'em. Note the opening guitar riff is sort of stolen from Glen Cambell - Gentle on my Mind.

Used to be as sober as a hanging judge...
Perhaps a Dylan reference? From "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts":
"The hanging judge was sober - he hadn't had a drink"

I also suspect that the reference to a hanging judge mihgt be a Dylan reference. Especially in light of the Dylan reference in the opening lines of MPLS

Or it could just be a reference to a judge, because when I think of 'em, I usually think of them as either sober, or hanging, or...both.
But GhostofPaul, pleeeeeeeaaaase post the rest of the lyrics. This song is on permanent repeat in my car right now and it's making me crazy.

Here's my best effort at deciphering these lyrics. The mumbling about the dollar (I think?!?) and that last line at the end (sounds like a toast?) could be way off, but it's the best I can do.
Knockin’ em’ back
Well I’m drinkin’ once again Just to make the pills kick in I’m drinkin’, once again there ain’t no doubt You better look out, drinkin’ once again I want to scream and shout Want to let the bad guys win Let em’ out I used to be as sober as a hangin’ judge Now the law has went and left me flat You better go around baby, now I won’t budge Thinkin’ I’m back Knockin’ em’ back Knock knockin’ em’ back
I’m drinkin’, once again Just to make them pills kick in And just to see the bad guys win
(Solo)
I used to be as sober as a hangin’ judge Now the law has went and left me flat Better go around baby, now I won’t budge I’m back Knock knockin’ em’ back Knock knockin’ em’ back
Here’s a dollar, gotta get more money Here’s a bottle, now I’m funny
Drinkin’ again Just to make the pills kick in Oh you ain’t gettin’ used to me, at your university Just want to let the bad guys out
I used to be as sober as a hangin’ judge Now I see the law has left me flat Out of my way, go around baby, I won’t budge Knockin’ em’ back Knock knockin’ em’ back Knock knockin’ em’ back
Well I know it’s almost over, and that ain’t no lie Spirits that I’m drinkin’ once again Last night I got up and I got dressed to cry Drinkin’ again Drink drinkin’ again, drink drinkin’ again Drink drinkin’ again, drink drinkin’ again, drink drinkin’ again This here to you baby

Pure poetry.
WTF?
He must've written that while drinking again.

"Here’s a bottle, now I’m funny"
God, this song is depressing.

"Last night I got up and I got dressed to cry"
Sheesh.
This silly song with all these kind of meaningless lyrics, and then *that*.
PW does it again.

WOW! I wasn't going as "cerebral" as you all. My question was what does he say in the pre-chorus? Lots of you mentioned a hangin' judge and so forth...
I was thinking/listening really simply. which is easy for me...
"used to be sober like an angel" "now I see That Lie has left me flat"
Perhaps that's why my music career went the way of the shitter? I can't pen a lyric to fight my way out of a wet record contract.

I think its "got dressed to crawl" not cry. That would be knee-pads and a nut cup I think. And a trench coat in the Winter.
