The MPLS Star Tribune's Chris Riemenschneider does a mini-review of the Open Season soundtrack in his weekly local music column: Westerberg goes wild As if Cameron Crowe's "Singles" weren't cartoony enough, Paul Westerberg's music hits the big screen once again this weekend in the animated movie "Open Season." The film has something of a buzz, as far as kiddie movies go. The soundtrack CD, though, which came out Tuesday on Lost Highway, seems to have people scratching their heads. Is it really a Westerberg album? And if so, could it possibly be any good? Yes on both counts. Nobody is going to confuse music for a talking-bear movie with Paul's edgiest stuff. One of his seven new tracks is even called "Right to Arm Bears." But the guy earned back enough indie credit from his past three CDs to get away with a little Hollywood fun. And this stuff really is fun. The tracks were recorded at Kevin Bowe's home studio with Bowe, Michael Bland and Jim Boquist (a k a His Only Friends, from his 2004 tour). Thus, the CD opener "Meet Me in the Meadow" sounds more garagelike than meadowy, and softer ditties "Whisper Me Luck" and "I Belong" have more soul than any Ashton Kutcher movie -- voice-over or not -- deserves. The soundtrack also includes Westerberg's 1998 tribute to Bob Stinson, "Good Day," plus recordings of new songs he wrote, one by Pete Yorn (pretty good) and one by Smash Mouth-wannabes Deathray (blecch). Westerberg and Tommy Stinson reportedly played a few songs for the movie's premiere in L.A. on Monday. So much for that Replacements reunion having any mystique left, but Westerberg continues to keep his solo career interesting.

"Reportedly"? Is there some question, like maybe it was a Tommy impersonator up there on Monday night?

He has to go out every night for his job. He can't be expected to actually Google something. Or maybe his local music street cred requires not knowing too much about what happens in L.A.

"Reportedly"? Is there some question, like maybe it was a Tommy impersonator up there on Monday night? or....maybe it was all staged. A faux-PW as well. This is Hollywood, folks. The same people who staged the moon landing and faked the feel-good 1970's.

PW never left his basement in Edina. What were we thinking?
