The Mats continue to impress critics on faraway island nations of the Pacific. Now it's Australia's Xpress Magazine (online) THE REPLACEMENTS - Don't You Know Who I Think I Was? The latest installment in best-of collections for Minneapolis' finest export, The Replacements, is finally upon us. Don't You Know Who I Think I Was? is a single disc compilation that spans the whole of The Replacements recorded career. Kicking off with a swag of material from Sorry Ma I Forgot To Take Out The Trash, Stink and Hootenanny is a fair indication of the band's rawness, although the inherent melody belies their hardcore roots. The thing that will have fans of The Replacements jumping all over Don't You Know Who I Think I Was? is two new tunes recently laid down by a reformed line-up (minus the sadly deceased Bob Stinson). Of the pair, Message To The Boys is a ragged sing-along that resembles the sound of Westerberg songs in and around the time of the Singles soundtrack, while Pool & Dive captures the overdriven guitar and earthy harmony that ensured The Replacements were considered the godfathers of grunge. While maybe a little too much emphasis is given to the early recordings, any release that includes Here Comes A Regular, Bastards Of The Young, Alex Chlilton, Achin' To Be and Can't Hardly Wait is always going to be a winner. Don't You Know Who I Think I Was? underlines The Replacements' claim to a prime position in the rock and roll hall of fame. _CHRIS HAVERCROFT

You have to sell to be in the HOF. True. PTMM only sold 300,000 and that was their peak, right? The Mats have NO chance. Fine with me. What's the actual worth of the HOF anyway?
