Seeing Tommy this weekend at the Uptown Bar reminded me of an article/review I read about the time of Folker's release. This was by Ramenoodle ( Chris Reimenschneider) of the Star Tribune and he wrote:
"What's surprising about these new albums -- besides the pretty-easy-to-come-to opinion that Stinson's is actually a little better than Westerberg's ..."
I realize this is a Westerberg board and should probably tell me what the results will be, but I've read a lot of people's complaints on the album.

I like Village Gorilla Head a ton more than Folker. Folker is my 2nd least favorite Westerberg album including Replacements.
I think VGH is a much more solid album, and there isn't a song I skip. I'm looking forward to future solo albums from Tommy.

To be honest, I think Tommy made a better record with Bash and Pop. VGH is solid, but I don't listen to it nearly as much as Friday Night.
Folker has some of my favorite Westerberg solo songs ("Jingle", "Lookin' Up In Heaven", "23 Years Ago", "As Far As I Know", "How Can You Like Him?", and "Folk Star"...wow, that's pretty much half the record) and at least two of my least favorite ("What About Mine?" and "Breathe Some New Life", which unfortunately are placed way too close to each other...nice J. Mascis-esque solo on BSNL though). My favorite Westerberg solo release is still Stereo/Mono, but Folker is still damn solid and though I think he can still make a better album at this point in his career, it brings no shame upon his legacy.
So I guess my vote goes firmly with Paul.

I think that VGH is a much better cd. My faorite solo PW cd is 14 song, but I still don't think that he has recorded his best cd. Folker lacks quality in the production of the cd. In addition to that, a real drummer makes all the difference in the world.....PW needs a producer and drummer. He is still one of the premier songwriters.......

VGH works better as an album. Yep, but it needs more cowbell!

cowbell line is funny. Two very different records. Ridiculous to compare. Tommy's material was probably put together over the last 5 years while Paul has put out 4 or 5 (lost count) records over that timeperiod. What if Paul put the best 14 or so tracks from the last few years together on one release? No comparison.
Bash & Pop's record was great and I still listen to it often. Saw them in Maxwell's in Hoboken. I actually prefer the new/old Perfect release (Once, Twice, Three Times a Maybe) to VGH. That was an awesome band and it's a shame they're not working together any more.
anyway, I vote Folker. track 2 kills me.

It's a tough choice....I can't decide.... I love them both..... I think i agree with VGH working better as an album though.
