What I hear-
My Dad sitting in his chair, he sits and stares all day. At his flat screened TV at Christmas he got from me. With is finger, as he give a touch, He tells me that I PLAY too much. (As in play guitar too much, rough fingers?) He sits there and watches alone. I'd give him everything I own. My Dad sitting in a chair still got hair and pride. Ask him how he's feelin', with an IMBECILIC grin he's fine. Cancels doctors appointments, he says they only make him come back. He's still got some ointment from when my sister had that RASH. His passions always been golf, He always pulled for the Twins. Broke his back some months ago, and complained of a twinge. My Dad sitting in his chair, does a crossword, then Today He's got his chocolate swoon(?) and with his spitoon takes aim. His Bible on the floor, next to the baseball box score. His dresser is a picture book, of his one and only Grandson. My Dad sitting in his chair, never seen me play. He gets a kick from the newspaper when he sees the family name. His Bible on the floor, next to the baseball box score. and on his dresser are pictures of his one and only Grandson. My Dad I Love My Dad I Love My Dad I Love My Dad I Love......... [/quote]

A baseball box score is simply a summary of a game by the numbers (or statistics as most sports fans call 'em) that are published in the sports section of the newspaper every day.

the early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese so I'm a 48 hour early bird, partway through my second spin, making these comments pretty superficial but here we go:
- Did "Now I Wonder" start life as When Will We Arrive and at some intervening point pass through a phase as When We Will Arrive? Is there any other song in Paul's catalog where the title and first words are the same? - "My Dad" ... the part that's not Dylan sounds to me like "Don't Fear the Reaper." That's a bit creepy, so I'm gonna choose to hear it as an AAA-like riff instead. - "Anyway's All Right." First time he's quoted an earlier song title (I Will Dare)? Also, "High Time" mention in "$100 Groom" - "$100 Groom" The broom-jumping is an African-American wedding tradition if I remember my "Roots" miniseries rightly. I hear a lot of Merry Go Round in this song. Add "rash" to the body maladies/dysfunction list (vomit makes that repeat appearance this time round too). - As Far As I Know ... my fave of the ones I'd heard before (means I like it better than Heaven) but nobody spellchecked the liner notes (sky's-skies) - "What About Mine" Fave brand new song for me. I like how the adult "mine" becomes the kid's "mine" and how he belts it a la never MIND. - His interludes hark back to music of days of old: strike down the band, the drums and fife line

This record just makes me so HAPPY. And thats a really strange thing for anyone calling themselves Suicainekid to say I still haven't had time to digest it properly but the glorious melodies, brilliant lyrics and classic delivery just grabbed me from the first listen. It just sounds so wonderfully breezy and natural. He's really let the songs breathe here and has come up with some totally innovative ways to tart things up within the constraints of one man cranking 'em out in his basement. The words 'Year' 'Album' 'The' and 'Of' come to mind. In a different order than that ofcourse!

Very eloquently put, suicainekid...
Paul's melody lines in particular are as strong as they've ever been, and his hooks also stand out more on this record. IMO, there isn't a weak song on this album, even with people mentioning how they didn't dig '23 Years Ago', which grew on me after a few listens and now stands out as an epic tune about looking back on your life and regretting certain romantic choices you've made (or in this case, perhaps didn't make). Other standouts are certainly "When Will We Arrive" with great lyrics and a wonderful chorus, "My Dad" (enough said, but the outro kills me in it's loving simplicity alone), "$100 Groom" - a fun, raunchy rocker in the vein of "Kickin' The Stall" - just a feel good tune about nothin' much at all, "What About Mine" which is just perfect in every way, really...another should-be hit that won't be..."Any Way It's All Right" - the little bridge part with the "flower bedroom" lyrics really lifts this one up, along with the various great one-liners from Paul spread throughout..."Gun Shy", which reminds me of just hanging out, getting ready to go out on a Friday night - another feel-good pop song....Okay, you get the point, the whole damn album's great and stands up with anything Paul's released.

you know, i think i have put my $.02 in before the "official" date, but i asked the lackey at best buy to go get me a copy today (one day early). there were none out (indeed, no westerberg section at all!).
he complied, and i must say that even though i have been hearing this for a month or so, it sounds A LOT better to have it officially with the packaging & everything.
sonically, i don't think it DOES sound any different, but 23 years ago has been skipped from day one, but it is really growing on me. the electric work reminds me a lot of swinging party on this tune for some reason.
i LOVE folk star, but i think gun shy is now my favorite "rocker" ("folker"?) on the album.
all the other songs i have talked about in the past are still just as good to me now as the first time i heard them: my dad, heaven, how can you like him?, etc. etc.
my dad still moves me, lyrically.

i'm in love with track number 5, which seems to have two different names. on the back of the CD package it's called "Anyway's All Right," but in iTunes it shows up as "Any Way It's All Right." hmm, anyone else notice this. or does everyone listen to music the old-fashioned way on a stereo or some such nonsense?
does "what about mine?" remind anyone else of "lookin' out forever?"

More racket than Stereo, more drone than Mono - or is that the other way around? Quieter than CFMT.
Basically it's another Paul Westerberg album - again reminds me of late 60's/early 70's Kinks, and Ronnie Lane's albums.
Like everything he's done since 2002, I'd give it a thumbs up, and if this is the stuff he makes alone in his basement, I hope the thought of inviting other people to play on his records never again enters his mind.

Now that Folker's officially out, our lyrics discussions can be out in the open. Now there's a thread for each Folker song over in the Lyrics folder--much thanks to deebee76, whose versions from this thread kick off each thread there.
Check it out, and bring a friend.

At first, the lyrics I posted kinda belonged here, because I know we didn't want Folker discussion seeping into any forms where people weren't warned in advance, but now that they've been posted in the lyrics section, it may be best to delete them here and clear up some space for straight-up reviews, while we discuss the lyrics over in the lyrics forum...done!

I'm hear'n "Waiting for the Sun" (Jayhawks) from the guitar solo forward on "How can you like him"..... anyone feeling me on this?
If I were a country disco DJ on high grade Copenhagen, then I could see a good mix here....

If I were a country disco DJ on high grade Copenhagen, then I could see a good mix here.... Absolutely, I independantly came up with the same thought earlier today. Very Louris-like playing on this one. Is it too late for my early bird review? I think the whole thing is brilliant. Like others have said, it's not a first listen love. It takes a little gettin to know, then steals your heart away.
