I don't care what critics think.
CFMT is a complex record, even though that wasn't the first thing I thought when I played it. Songs like "Dirty Diesel" and "Making Me Go" caught my attention right away, but "Pine Box" and "These Days" are the ones sticking with me. CFMT still trades on what Mr. Berg does best - giving you a melody to hum and then smacking you in the face with the punchline - but it also shows in a way how far he's travelled as a writer. The punch isn't quite as dangerous anymore, although it seriously stings.
Stereo and Mono were easy to like because I was so pleased to see the man out in public again, plus the material was so fresh compared to anything I had been hearing on the local community radio station. I guess I got spoiled and by the time CFMT came around, now I want to sit down and think about what's going on with these songs.
Still having a hard time with DMS, but I think it's me. I have to be in a certain dark mood to listen to that record - kinda like you have to be in a certain mood to sing along with Van Halen - (not the same mood, mind you) - and thankfully I haven't seen that mood for awhile.
Thanks for reading, if you did.

Ele - Me thinks you hit it on the head. I liked CFMT from the beginning but it sinks in even deeper the more I listen to it. It actually sounds more soulful - for lack of a better word - to me and songs that I didn't like as much at first listen are growing on me.
I also agree with DMS - a little more difficult for me to get into but once in the mood, it sits well.
