www.nypress.com/16/51/gaming/ondl.cfmAs a Paul Westerberg fan familiar with the Replacements blues, uh, "rave ups," the release of Dead Man Shake, a blues record on Fat Possum, was cause for trepidation. I am happy to announce Dead Man Shake bears little resemblance to the atrocities the Replacements committed to the 12-bar blues. While Westerberg’s drumming hardly swings more than Christopher Mars’, it is mostly unobtrusive. The album contains an abundance of tasty guitar tones, and for once shows the kind of guitar chops that he has hinted at in interviews, if not on any record or live performance. The production of this and his other recent work shows the increasing sophistication he has brought to his home recordings. Others may disagree, but I find this, and Come Feel Me Tremble, far more exciting than the much-ballyhooed Stereo.
