ok - so there is a new westy song on one of those forkin' discs you can buy when you pick up your venti hazelnut lattes at starbucks. we all knew that, i hope. it's called "lookin' up to heaven" (i think). kathy, i think, has stated that there is a good chance it is going to be on folker, but my question is: has anyone heard it yet? is it cool enough a song for one to COMPLETE strip oneself of his personal ethics pertaining to music purchases?
i'd love to hear this song. my ethics are stretched so thin the way it is. you see, i do love (honestly) venti hazelnut lattes.
should i break down, and just start purchasing my music at that goddamn place, too? i feel like the suburbs just moved into my brain.

I think Starbucks is open late so go and buy it tonight. Besides Paul's excellent song - worth the price of admission - you get - well a bunch of good stuff (Jayhawks, Vic Chesnutt, Josh Ritter, ...). I ended up buying two more cds of artists on the compilation - make that three when Folker comes out.
I'm ignorant of issues with Starbucks - but I like the idea that they promote music of these (some) lesser known artists via these compilations, and that Paul would lend his name to one.

that's true about starbucks promoting some good, lesser-known musicians... there's just the whole stigma attached to going to starbucks.
it's kinda the wal mart of coffee shops.

Oh man. I can't believe what I'm hearing here. Within a two block radius of my apartment, there are literally 5 Starbucks. Hey, if you buy the CD, make sure to get the whole collection! You can't have just one Starbucks mix tape--aren't you a completist? I would have no problem making an mp3 of this song and posting it to a website. Morally, I feel obligated to give out the song. I don't know why everyone is so reticent--mix tapes, and now mix CDs, have been a part of our lives for decades now. You know how I got people into the Replacements? By making them mix tapes of copyrighted Replacements stuff (and some bootleg stuff--of course, everyone here is morally okay with bootlegs). Yes, I gave out songs that I don't own to friends of mine, and some of them didn't get into The Replacements and didn't go and buy the original CDs--they never paid for listening to "Here Comes a Regular!" Shame on them and me! Unfortunately, no one who has the song wants to give it out--apparently Paul will lose money this way. But I will track it down, I promise (before Folker comes out). And I will not pay for it. And then I will give you a copy.

Saying Starbucks is a coffee shop is like saying Bryan Ferry is a rock-n-roll artist rather than a glorified lounge singer. Dressing like a hip accountant contridicts all that is rock-n-roll. And, like Bryan Ferry, having to order a "tall" instead of a plain old medium is so pretensious.(I'm not even sure if Bryan spells his name with a "y" but he seems like the type of Brian that would).
Starbucks is an nothing more than some Madison Ave. angle that, like so many other things, we have to endure. Thankfully the coffee is pretty good- not as good as Tim Horton's, but good. And if my patronage will put a few bucks in PW's pocket I'm good with that.

Because they aren't available for purchase and because Paul doesn't mind bootlegging his shows.
FWIW, there wasn't supposed to be this huge lagtime btw when "Folker" came out and this Starbucks thing. It wasn't meant to be this little bit of the CD that was released months ahead of time to jack people out of additional cash to hear the song early. They were supposed to come out in relative proximity to each other - obviously the hope being that if someone unfamiliar with Paul heard this song on the sampler and liked it, they would go out and buy "Folker".

I dunno, the couple of pennies that PW would make off one song on a compilation seems miniscule compared to other things a person could do. I think obtaining it through other means (perhaps the local CD has a hundred or so used copies?) would be practical. Ya gotta be pragmatic sometimes.

Speaking as a self confessed music snob, I have to say that anything that will make the man some decent money and expose him to a larger audience is fine with me. He's paid his dues to us, so he's due to be paid. In my opinion.
Plus I'm a caffeine addict, although I work the Dunkin' D because it's cheaper. But when I get my Christmas bonus (insert sound of pennies jangling in pocket) I'll get a Triple Non Fat Skim Venti Mocha Explosion along with the compilation CD.
Happy turkey day all. I'm stoned on tryptophan from the meat OD. Rock on.

P.s. Kathy rocks - thanks for this board.

I have loved the Fruit Bats song a lot-Anyone else? But I can't find their album here yet, so I bought The Shins, something similar, and it is O.K. The PW song is amazing.

please, please, please keep your dignity -- it's one of the few things we get to keep. look for the song in a used bin -- get a pal from here to make you a "tape" -- do whatever you must but do, do, do keep your dignity !!! i'm not sayin' paul shouldn't be paid -- he should -- and is -- paul has some money -- maybe not britney spears-michael jackson- madonna money but he's doin' okay me thinks. think about it...he hasn't had a day job in over twenty years -- he lives in a decent sized house in a "good neighborhood" in a toney suburb -- rides in a volvo -- has the gear to make his own records -- the wife ain't workin' no day job either -- keeps himself in stoogies -- supports a child -- eats 'butta" steaks once in a while -- so, yeah, he ain't no hilton but he ain't starving and playing the skyways for loose change either. just don't forget to buy "folker" from your favorite indy record store the day it comes out and remember if you give your dignity away you can't buy it back!!!

There's really no dilemma. Buy the cd at starbucks. enjoy the westerberg track. When Folker comes out bring it back to starbucks and tell them you got it for your birthday (no receipt) last week and it simply doesn't work; like it doesn't cue up on your cd player or something. Say you want a new one. If they have it in stock, get it and keep it wrapped, walk two doors down to the nearest starbucks and return it for coffee credit. If the first starbucks is sold out go straight for the coffee credit; sink into a comfy starbucks chair with your portable player and the freshly released "folker" and your hot coffee and coffee credit card. If you hate starbucks coffee; trade the cd for the beach boys compilation they have. It's a win-win situation

I think artists should set up some sort of donation system that would allow people who download their music without buying the albums to still give money to the artist directly - skipping the label "middleman". I know that the music industry would absolutely abhor the idea, but screw them...
For the record I did download the last few PW records, but then I also went out and bought them too... However if I could have sent $10 directly to Paul, I would have been better with that..
