With the comments about the extent to which Paul figures in Laurie's book, I started thinking about the places Laurie seems to figure in Paul's music. (Without getting all stalker on them, I mean.)
- She laid claim to coming up with a song title of his ... It's a Wonderful Lie?
- I personally interpret "Boring Enormous" as being about the two of them.
- Backing vocals on ... is it Ain't Got Me?

I think in the Besterberg liner notes, Paul credited her for coming up with the title for "What a Day.." but 'Wonderful Lie" makes total sense, considering she was in a band named Zuzu's Petals.

"What a Day..." always sounded reminiscent of Francois Truffaut's "Day for Night".
And that has really nothing to do with this thread topic...just something that came to my mind.

- Backing vocals on ... is it Ain't Got Me? I hear female backing vocals on Hillbilly Junk, just assumed it was her.

I'd assume that "Making Me Go" was written about her.

I thought I read somewhere when SG came out that she had been on each of his first 3 solo records...I know you’re right about “Ain’t Got Me” off Eventually, and I thought it was both her and Johnny (baby crying at the end) on “Whatever Makes you Happy” off of SG but I can not remember what song it was on 14 Songs and I don’t have the c.d. jacket here at my desk….Anyone have a guess? I may be way off here though.

I'm pretty sure she did the female back-up vocals on "Dice Behind Your Shades". One of Paul's finest tunes from that album.

She wrote Born For Me, didn't she? I think it was Best Thing That Never Happened.

in an abstract way, she "wrote" most of his material; post replacements.

i would paul alot more credit than to suppose his songs were directly linked to his wife...just because he uses the term "she" means nothing more than telling a story...he's too good to link things that ditectly, not that he didnt once give it away, in the song "things"....but it's all so relative in the creative process...and he does love ambiguity, it's what makes all great art worth a damn....in my low opinion...

I'd tend to agree. Besides, songs songs are about women the singer doesn't "have".... I'd guess more songs are about yearning for what you don't have as opposed to celebrating what you do have.

Westerberg wrote "Born for Me"," Best Thing that Never Happened" & all of his greatest misses post Replacements, not Laurie Lindeen. Sheesh. However, Lindeen did sing backup on 2 tracks from his first 2 solo records: 93's "Dice Behind Your Shades" & 96's "Aint Got Me". Yes, PW did credit Laurie for the title"What a Day(For A Night") in the liner notes of 05's "Besterberg". 99's "Whatever Makes You Happy" could easily be interpreted to be about her tho. He has gone on, ahem, record to say most of his songs are composites of different people or pure fiction. He is, after all, Paul Westerberg. Give him some credit, 'kay?
