Who would Paul be comfortable enough with that he could make a truly collaborative "band" record without being suffocated by telling everyone what to do and rehearsing everything?
Another way of asking might be, who should be in Grandpaboy's band?
I guess we might as well eliminate all former Mats. Think he could get along with Keith Richards for 10-12 songs?

You can eliminate all debate on the drummer. It should and will be Michael Bland. I can't see Paul going with anyone else after everything he's said about him in recent interviews.

Steven Adler on drums, definitely. Duff McKagan, bass and I'd go with Izzy Stradlin over Slash.

jody stephens - drums geddy lee - bass lemmy - 2nd bass I really like this one. Love to hear Geddy doing the Tommy vocal part on Achin' To Be. They would need a lead guitar though. Maybe he could borrow Joe Perry for a tour?

I seriously doubt Peter Perrett or Paul Simonon would give a second thought to playing as Paul's hired guns.
John Stanier is too technical and metal.
Steven Adler...HAHAHAHAHA...ok, yeah...NO. *cough*Adler's appetite*cough*.
Ditto for Duff + Izzy, too rockstar for Paul.
Josh Freese...eh.
Ideally, the Revenge of the Crickets tour featuring: Paul, Chris, and Tommy would be cool. Green Day backing Paul would be really interesting as well. Fat chance on both ever happening. I'd be happy with Michael Bland and whoever else really, but for the sake of discussion...
pick and choose
Mickey Waller: drums Bill Stevenson: drums Atom(Rocket from the Crypt): drums
Frankie Stubbs(Leatherface): second guitar Blake Schwarzenbach(Jawbreaker, Jets to Brazil): second guitar John Felice(the Real Kids): second guitar Ryan Adams: second guitar ;D
Patty(Dillinger Four): bass Danny Thompson: bass Melissa Auf Der Maur: Bass Laura Ballance(Superchunk): bass

ok. here's my visionary idea. Paul is solo. his 2nd or 3rd song is 'Can't Hardly Wait". just as he sings "...Jesus rides (writes, whatever) beside me..." Tommy Stinson just appears on stage. everyone then, of course 'can hardly wait' to see what happens next. and then, what DOES happen next is that a full band blows us all the f away. then, we go back to our miserable lives, but we're somehow a little happier for having seen the show.

no, no, THIS is visionary!
paul, tommy, chris walk out on stage to thunderous applause. paul dedicates the entire show to me, tommy punches some fawning fan in the front row, chris flips us all off, and paul breaks a guitar over the head of peter jesperson.
then they all walk off the stage, and helmet reforms on the spot & rocks our asses steady with a 2 hour concert of billy joel covers.

Paul should have The Figgs back him. They're quite possibly the greatest rock band in the world and they can play anybody's music. Really...he'd have a great time with those guys.

Really...he'd have a great time with those guys. can't you see this is the "joke version" of this discussion? i know you are a new member & all, but... and for everyone, i would like to call a moretorium (or however you spell it) on nominating the figgs. i agree - they would be, ahem, perfect, but there have been seriously a buhzillion posts recommending them. point taken. i hope it happens... but not as much as i hope my little daydream above happens...
