Oh yeah! I forgot he did that song. He never seemed liked a Zep fan to me either but for what it's worth, on the "Shit Hits the Fans", the Mats do sloppy, partial versions or play intros to Heartbreaker, Misty Mountain Hop.

That was probably the influence of Bob...Even more unlikely, the Mats can be heard covering Yes's "Roundabout" on some old audience tapes. Didn't sound too bad. CF

I was surprised PW had ever even heard of Billy Joe Shaver - much less the Shaver song "Live Forever" - until I figured out that the bassist on Shaver's version was Keith Christopher, who played on Eventually.
An educated guess is Christopher turned PW on to that great, great song...

He did "Kentucky Rain" when he played in Louisville in 2004. Also he morphed one of his songs into "Sweet Virginia" during the same show. Got to meet with him before the show as I grew up with the guy he was staying with while he was in the Ville. Total Highlight!!! Got some funny pictures to prove it!!! Stereotypical fan thats me.

Postcards from Paradise.
Just doesn't sound like his kind of thing, although I love the song.
Maybe it was the line "Out on the ledge again, ready to jump again."

anything from open season. i am surprised paul did this recording. after all of these years saying f*@# the system i am surprised he did something that Sony Pictures would inevitably have a certain amount of creative control. i don't fault Paul for doing it ( i love the soundtrack ) but i was just surprised. i think if Paul did a soundtrack for some remote indie film with complete creative control it would be genius and it would win a boatload of awards.
p.s. postcards from paradise was a very pleasant surprise

The little snippet of I'M Eighteen surprised me, only because on Cooper's radio show his listener's send in interpretations of that song (on ukulele, spoons, etc)

Kept looking for a tape of the show to pop up, mostly for that cover. By the way, Love it to Death is a great album, or at least it was the favorite of this 9th grader.

In 87 the Mats played I'm 18 for an encore followed by Petula Clarke's "Downtown". This was at the Beacon Theatre, New York.

Billy Joe Shaver - "Live Forever", played at a number of shows on the latter half of the Folker tour.
Edit: Oops, didn't see somebody already listed it.

I know I've already answered this, but...I was surprised when I saw him in Madisn, Wisc., 1993 that he did "Buck Hill." As I get older I appreciate Hoot... more and more, to here a non-obvious tune off of that album really hits home even as a memory
