Strangely 70-some year old George Jones' voice still sounds absolutely awesome, and that man knows a bit about hard living.

All right, RJ, we got some George Jones! In an interview that I cannot place the source of but that was done at some point early or midway through PW's solo career, he said that he was singing in a more natural voice. So that makes me think the early voice was more of a conscious effort.
I love the way PW sings, then and now. He's right behind my Big Five: Ray Charles, Otis Redding, George Jones, Wilson Pickett, and Tammy Wynette. I got to see George and Tammy together a couple of years before she died. That was the one combo I thought I'd never get to see. God, they sounded good together. And of course there's the whole soap opera angle they played up, though they pretty oviously were not very fond of one another.

Meant to add a "right on" to gage's observation of George Jone's amazing ability to keep on ticking despite living so hard. After decades of alcohol and cocaine abuse, Jones walked out of the hospital weeks earlier than expected a decade or so ago following a car wreck that sliced into his liver. Think about how that liver has been abused, almost his entire life. Isn't Einstein's brain preserved somewhere for future study? They should do the same with Jones' liver. The first five times i went to see him he didn't show up, he was backstage too drunk to perform. He made the next dozen shows I attended, though. It's a close race between whom I've seen more, PW or George Jones. Nobody else even comes close attendance-wise.
