The Rock Hall is a joke, and most people in the rock community see that. Kind of sad, really.

This year's nominees for the RnR Hall of Fame: Chic The Dave Clark Five Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five R.E.M. The Ronettes Patti Smith The Stooges Joe Tex Van Halen I guess it wouldn't be very Matsian for them to get their due their first year of eligibility huh. Bastids. Last week, I saw the list of artist's eligible for this years nominations, and immediately had the image of David Lee Roth onstage flanked by Michael Stipe and Paul Westerberg pop into my head. LOL Would be funny if Van Halen and REM get in the same year. I can see the recap in the next days newspaper of the all-star jam at the end of the show. "Mike Mills, bass player of the group REM, was sent to the hospital after David Lee Roth, lead singer of the group Van Halen, accidentally kicked him in the head with one of his famous spinning samurai kicks. Mr Mills is being held for observation. " I was at the Rock Hall a few years back, and saw a display of drumsticks on a wall. If I remember correctly, it was from a private collector who had obtained drumsticks of all the big name drummers over the years. I was checking it out, and saw names like John Bohnam, Neil Peart, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker and Chris Mars...that last one caught me off guard. Needless to say I thought it was pretty cool, also thought it was funny in light of Paul's opinion on Chris's skills.

It's great for some deserving artists to get some long overdue recognition, artists who've created compelling work that rises above just the mainstream stuff. But the RRHoF has turned into a joke. The criteria is messed up---and just who are these "rock and roll experts" anyway who do the voting? Why is there no sunshine law in place? Why the secrecy? Let's see who voted for whom.
Honoring the early pioneers, like Chuck Berry and all is great. But at some point, I think the HoF has evolved into some sort of popularity contest and it just fuels an endless debate about who belongs and who doesn't.
"They do too belong!" "They do not!" "Do too!" "Do not!"
blah blah blah blah....who cares?

This year's nominees for the RnR Hall of Fame: Chic If Chic can be nominated then there is hope for the Mats..Basically the only criteria for induction after the 25 year mark is 'influence and significance'.. CF

Basically the only criteria for induction after the 25 year mark is 'influence and significance'.. CF How about basing it on fluids and insignificance? I think it would make the hall much more fun.

Hey guys, it's not just Rock & Roll: next week, Dr. Jerry Buss - he's the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers and to my knowledge has never once appeared in a movie or on a TV show, made a record, etc - gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

CF Isn't that more a nomination for Niles Rogers and a tip of the hat to his production credits. Did chic do more than one disco hit?

CF But the thing, though, is who is willing to go to battle for the Mats? Do they have enough backing from these "rock and roll experts"? Chic was part of the mainstream, they were of the industry. The Mats didn't really play that kind of game, did they? To warrant the kind of patronage from the music biz hot shots getting into the HoF ? A friend of mine found this link, pretty interesting insight into the HoF process: www.mtv.com/bands/m/music_geek/rockhallfame_040405/

Good point, RJ. It might be that HoF's are best suited to statistical empirical evidence, such as athletics. At least you can compare stats on strikes outs versus balls, Cy Young winners, Golden Glove awards, touchdown passes versus interceptions, etc... How can you really measure this vague criteria of significance and scope of influence? Yeah, you sort of intuitively know that someone like Dylan or the Beatles had an influence because they had affected pop culture on a big scale. But how do you really measure the scope of a band that has a cult status? Do you poll the peer groups and see what they have to say? I dunno if you can.

Its always seemed to me that Husker Du has been more influential anyways, although the bands I'm into are usually more influenced by the Replacements.
