If they had stayed together, I think the end result would have been the same..I mean could you see the 'Mats playing together in their 60's? Some things were just meant to be... I can see Tommy and Paul playing together thru infinity. But I think that it's better they never became the Stones...

No they couldn't have been the Stones, unless they came before the Stones. But they didn't. And the average American will only pay $325 a ticket for one band. The Stones are as much a brand as a band, and their market awareness is as broad as Coca Cola.
And Paul Westerberg, for as smart in many ways as I think he is, is nowhere near as business-savvy as Mick Jagger. In fact, he has probably been the polar opposite until the last few years.
Music-wise, though, Paul definitely stacks up. But was that the point of your question?
Yes and no is my answer. Overall, no. If they were, would that many of us pony up that kind of cash to see the Mats?

More to the point, I wouldn't pony up that much to see the Stones. But I would have a bottle of Coke if I may.

Did you say the Replacements were the bi-polar opposites of the Rolling Stones?
Speaking of which, PW's "Psychopharmacology" kicks the song by the same name by some other group's ass.

Someone said that once, don't know who, when or where: The Replacements could have been/were on their way to becoming/if they'd only accepted mass acceptance, etc. would have become the American Rolling Stones. True? Thats an old Bill Holdship quote...He made that statement back around 1986...but, I don't think he was being completely serious. CF From the All for Nothing booklet: "J. Kordosh and I met up with the guys in Los Angeles, shortly before the release of Pleased to Meet Me, which I was certain would transform them from contenders into 'America's Rolling Stones'."--Bill Holdship

Based on the depth and evolution of the songwriting (lyrics), I've always thought the 'mats were more the American "Who" than the American "Stones"
That's the answer I always get when I mention the 'mats anyway...
