Definitely PTMM for this guy. Was the first Mats record I listened to, and have loved it ever since.

Tim. Love PTMM but there's something brittle about it. Tim oozes.

Tim is your drinking buddy you can tell all your problems too, PTMM is the drinking buddy you can just have a kick ass rockin' time with...

Tim. Love PTMM but there's something brittle about it. Tim oozes. I find the production of PTMM alot better too, the power behind the drums is incredible.

As bad as everyone thinks Tim's production is, I'd say Please To Meet Me's is worse.

I think the cd versions of both of these suffer from the rush and greed of record companies to get their catalogs out on CD in the late 80's.
Some CD's were mastered from cassette copies, rather than 2 track reel masters or the multitrack originals. (the worst example is MCA's original Who CD's)
Hopefully soon we get actual remasters of both of these. And if we are really lucky, they find the original multitrack reels.
...and as far as Tim vs PTMM.....its a close call, but PTMM became the blueprint of how I wanted to play guitar and write songs. And it still is.

Tim, for "Left of the Dial" alone.

"Tim" is one of my five favorite albums of all time, but "PTMM" is at the top of my list.

We Tim people don't play fair. One way or another PTMM will be at least one vote shy.

As good as PTMM is, Tim is the 'Mats best record, IMO, if not the very pinnacle of Paul's writing with the 'Mats...

I gotta go with PTMM for Can't Hardly Wait and Alex Chilton. And that's in total disregard to Paul naming the album after me.
I've never read anything about who Tim is, anyway. Anyone know the story?

Wow. This is some "Sophie's Choice"!
Not sure I can make it, actually, but what Paul said in his rapid fire "reviews" of the Mats records in the CFMT dvd comes to mind. TIM - "Coulda been". PTMM - "Frightened". (And still a toss-up as "frightened" can make for some pretty great r 'n' r - and does!)
Also, as regards calling the record "Tim", I read somewhere (in the "All For Nothing" linernotes, I think) it might've been an homage to Monty Python and The Holy Grail - when the knights ask the sorcerer his name, "Some call me...Tim".

The spirit of "Pleased"...that's what gets me. Mars' drumming is superb throughout. Paul's writing had turned a new corner, IMO. The perfect blend of bratty and brainy. I just wish they'd included "P.O. Box" and "Make This Your Home" on the final album!

Definitely "Tim" for me but if can find "The Replacements, An Interview with Paul Westerberg" vinyl on Sire records check it out. It's basically "Pleased to Meet Me" with interview segments spliced between, and relating, to each song with Paul interviewd by Julie Panebianco.

PTMM for me. I got a little story...
I was a junior in High School when it came out and I was completely obsessed. One day my creative writing teacher asked if anyone had some music they would like to play while we worked on an assignment. Of course I had PTMM in my pocket (If I couldn't listen to it, at least I could touch it!) so I played Alex Chilten, I Don't Know, and Night Club Jitters. Not only did the teacher say that she really liked it, but a girl who I thought was the coolest kid in school (and who I would never have the nerve to talk to) came right up to me and asked who that was and started talking about music. So I got into a whole new circle of friends because of PTMM.
Viva la PTMM!

I'll go with PTMM. One of the top five rock and roll records ever made.

PTMM , because they recorded it in Memphis and wore Dr. Seuss hats to a dinner to celebrate finishing it and hid their desserts under the hats. Who hasn't done that?
