He's friends with Billie Joe so perhaps they hung out but I can't see him sitting out in the crowd.

I would hope he had better taste than that... Those boys from Albany, CA (a little town adjacent to Berkeley) are ALRIGHT! I still feel a little bad about the time I inadvertantly desparaged them myself. There cool. Albany's cool. Green Day's cool.

they're actually from Berkeley. the singer, Billie, his sideband did a sick cover of Achin To Be a few years ago. (picture circa '95)

That's a great photo...where's it from? Paul did a show at a radio station in Berkeley during the 96 tour.

this might be a longshot, but would anyone on this board happen to have recorded that MPLS Green Day show the other night? I heard they pulled out some rare songs, I'd really like to hear this show. thanks...

Green Day is cool, I don't get the negativity towards them. Remember last year when there were some threads about bands that could be Paul's backing touring band, and word surfaced that both Green Day and Cheap Trick actually volunteered?
I don't know how true that is, but it stepped Green Day up a notch in my book. Cheap Trick was already up there and just made them cooler.

Green Day had a hilarious paid program TV ad for their greatest hits CD a few years ago. Anyway just off that CD there are at least a couple tips of the lyric hat to Paul:
"I will dare, Keep in mind I'll be there for you" - Poprocks and Coke
"Sanitation expir ... ation" - Warning
I would bet there's quite a few more sly Mats quotes to be found in the Green Day songbook.

yea, i've caught both of those before. there's also "dumbstruck, color me stupid" from "waiting". and of course the most obvious, mr. whirly in "misery". wow, that's a lot from just one album!

green day's friend jason white (current 2nd guitarist on their tour) had a band called The Influents (very old 97s, early wilco) a couple years ago. i saw them at a skatepark with a crowd of under 10 people. the band got drunk and played "can't hardly wait", and very strangely jason played a verse or two of "when i come around" (he was in the music video too...). and this was after jason already toured once with green day. just a fun story for you all to enjoy....
