U2 make me want to break things. i can't see the similarity. If i am in denial then that's the way it's gonna stay.

I've always thought darlin' One sounded U2-ish. Suprised to hear PW thinks so too. The rest of the album doesn't sound too U2-ish though. Well,The mexican Bar Mitzvah song, I could hear Bono sing that one.

I remember an interview in New Music Express (I still have it somewhere) around the time DTAS came out, and Tommy said he was worried that "Darlin One" was a bit pretentious. He also said "if Aqualung is a classic, then 'I'll Be You' is history."

I remember reading a Paul interview in rolling stone circa DTAS and he was saying that he thought the Darling One intro was very U2 esqu (military snare drum rolls and dramitic gutiar) Straight from the horse's mouth. I personaly don't hear it. Never read that Paul quote, but I've always thought that Darling One sounded U2-esque.

I don't know about DTS (it sounds more like flesh for lulu) but valentine sounds very bono at the beginning.......listen to FLA-AME.

Woah, Nazareth, you're right... for a second there, Paul DOES sound a lot like Bono. Thankfully, it passes quickly. I must've listened to that song several hundred times at this point, and I never noticed that similarity.
(Incidentally, for anyone else listening for this, the word in question is actually "plane", not "flame".)

DTAS has a big sound (complete with more keys than usual and reverb-y guitars and drums), plus a melodramatic lyrical tinge on some of the tunes, like "Darlin' One" and "We'll Inherit the Earth." I doubt it was entirely deliberate, but there are absolutely some 80s-era U2 moments on there.
I think the most U2-sounding tune Paul ever wrote was "Runaway Wind," though. Listen to it, then listen to "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" sometime. Not many Westerberg songs have lyrics like "a cathedral of torches lights the night" or "I'm your spark," without some snarky line to follow it. That sort of overblown imagery is U2 territory.
