Sort of changing the subject, but does anyone know what MTV perfomance Paul walked out of? I have a vague memory -- I'm pretty sire he was going to perform "First glimmer" in the studio and I think he actually did but that during he interview segment, he asked Lewis Largent what his fave mats song was, and the guy froze and didn't have an answer and things went bad and Paul just kinda left. I'm sure I have not so many facts right but I am sure it was for 14 Songs and Lewis Largent was involved.

Wasn't Lewis Largent the heavy metal guy after the other heavy metal guy left?

from day one, i assumed it was about himself. paul has mentioned people thought he wrote it about tommy, but again, i think he wrote it about himself. Yeah, I always thought WCF was about Paul. And it doesn't or wouldn't surprise me that some of these MTV vj's don't know crap about music. They just read the cue cards and fawn over their guests. God forbid they'd have to actually do some research about someone they're interviewing.

As we all know his answers aren't always consistent but now I want to find that interview.

Lewis Largent was a like a moron & he like used the word like, like way too often. Like when he interviewed Paul, he like, told him he dug him & like that we was like a hero or something like that... how that guy ever made it on TV , like, I'll nevr know..

Well, imagine having some veejay telling how much they love your stuff, how great you are, only to find out they've been kissing your ass all along and they don't even know who the hell you are. That can't make you feel very appreciated as an artist on their show.

I had this discussion the other day with someone who had seen Paul on the Late, Late show : I wonder if Paul's able to shake off a bad performance or is he embarrassed, pissed-off, mortified etc. I guess that (the liner notes) answered my question.

I just watched that again last night. I laughed most of my way through it but the band sounded great themselves. I was at the taping and in the moment thought it was wonderfully him. I don't think he thought twice about it.

That was the story I recall anyway. If Paul asked me at a show what song he should play next, I would totally choke cause 100 choices would go thru my mind and by the time I narrowed it down to one, Paul would be in a cab on his way back to the hotel.

okay, if the guy just froze up, then that's a completely different context. as for what the catalyst was that made Paul walk off, maybe it was something completely else. does anyone know of this story about Paul being interviewed for Space Ghost? www.revolutionsf.com/article.html?id=349Here's the excerpt from an interview with one of the producers for the Space Ghost/Adult Swim show: How do you handle the interviews for Space Ghost?
DAVE: You pull a lot of things right out of your butt. We come with questions, and, yes, you try to kind of improv. I have the freedom of being able to be cut out of [the audio] at the end, and so you just try to engage them, and try to get them going in any sort of direction. We come with about 20 or 25 questions, to try and get 'em rolling, try and get 'em to say as much funny stuff as possible.
What's the most painful interview you've ever done?
DAVE: Paul Westerberg, from what was once a cool band, the Replacements. I mean, he just didn't get it, and I didn't explain it very well, and I think he thought that I made this reference to "Kick the Can", the childhood game. I think it was a reference to his past alcoholism or something, but… either way, he said some very unprintable things, and pulled his mike off and took off. That was a really embarrassing moment for me professionally. That would be it, definitely.I think I remember hearing it that Paul wasn't really sure what the program was, which is an animated thing. So, the producers are there asking these goofy questions in the cartoon character but Paul didn't know that and thought they were messing with him. He told them something like, "F*ck you, assholes" and walked off.

I remember seeing this when it aired, and my impression was what you're describing. He seemed genuinely in awe of having Paul on his show, nervous, with a shaky voice, and he asked him after he played First Glimmer if he'd play a Replacements song. Paul's reply was something like "Sure, if I can remember it. What do you want to hear?" Lewis froze. I kind of felt sorry for him. He kind of reminds me (in retrospect) of that Chris Farley character. (Remember when you were in that band the Replacements? That was awesome!) For those who claimed in another thread that Runaway Wind sounds like Bob Seger, I believe it was during his conversation with Lewis Largent that Paul said that while he was writing First Glimmer, he was concerned that it was going to end up sounding like "Night Moves for the '90's." Ironic, sort of, that that happened with a different song on that album (for some people, anyway. I personally don't hear Seger in Runaway Wind).

Fantastic. Josh Freese is great.

I kind of think it's doubtful that would've been aired. I've only seen the show a few times and you get this goofy stuff like Space Ghost asking David Byrne what kind of super powers he has. But the questions can be irreverant and in some cases kind of wise ass-like, if I remember correctly. And sure, I'd be pissed too if they were joking around about something personal and private.
