I hope that becomes more widely available at a later date. I think I saw a shorter version on YouTube once. But, it no longer seems to be available (last time I looked). Thanks for putting that up.

I have seen clips through the years, never a complete movie. I have always wondered what the footage represented, a promo, a documentary, home movies, etc.
Don Was was very much in awe of Westy. I remember reading a print interview of Was and he stated that producing John Lennon would not have been better. Maybe they can work together again...

Man I'd love to see this! Wonder why she shelved it for 20 years??

"It was never released publicly." Sort of. Around half of it was released on the DVD magazine Circuit 1:3 with an added Timor interview that was apparently done just for the DVD, and then Capitol put the whole thing on a promo only disc. The Virgin Megastore in San Francisco played it on the in-store monitors before the solo acoustic performance in 2002. They turned the sound down when he took the stage, but continued to loop the video. You can hear him on the recordings of this show getting irritated about it. He tells them to turn it off and then says something like, "Nobody's supposed to have that." The Circuit edit is still up on DailyMotion.

Yeah, it was available on the trading circuit back in the 00s. Pretty sure I have a DVD-R copy of it somewhere. I didn't think it was all that rare.

So, did anyone get to see this? It was shown this past Saturday. Who would we lobby to get this released for all to see? I assume the director? Wonder why it was shelved in the first place? I'm guessing Paul didn't care for the final product? Here's an interview with her where she mentions the film a bit. www.kcrw.com/music/shows/guest-dj-project/ondi-timoner

Thanks also, Mike529.
Given that it was advertised as a short film, I wonder whether it's anything more than the 12-13 minutes in the two clips above? Seems like maybe the most honest interview Paul ever gave. I really like it.
[Edit: it's clear from the Ondi interview linked above that these two clips aren't the full film. I hope it becomes available elsewhere soon.]

The full film that made the rounds on DVD-R is about 28 minutes. This is presumably from the Capitol promo. Jer mentions above that he had a copy, but I went digging and I couldn't turn up mine. I did find the Circuit DVD though, which is probably where those DailyMotion clips are from. There's also an acoustic version of Whatever Makes You Happy shot with Don Was from the Capitol promo. There was also a bit of Don Was footage of Paul at the piano in the full cut. This acoustic footage also was released on a promo-only CD-ROM series called Launch that I used to get as a Virgin Records employee:

What the film that was shown the 20-30-min version available online, or was this longer?

I just dug mine up and watched it. It's like 28m, seems complete I'm pretty postive. It looks like a VHS transfer, with the thin line of distortion at the bottom of the screen, but can't be sure - that could be from the actual taping. Quality is good, but definitely single camera, camcorder quality. Not like a film crew was following him around.
It's a lot of Paul doing phone interviews in an LA hotel and being asked the same question about The Replacements getting back together over and over again. Lots of walking around Minneapolis and LA. Lots of him in the studio with Don Was recording SG, a couple bits of alt-takes and things that weren't on the record, and some more traditional interview stuff about the record. Chain smoking and his hair looks great. Have to say it's a lot cooler than I remember it being, as I'm not a fan of that record (except a couple tunes). Just good to see the guy again, but I also have to say he doesn't come across as happy or at ease. He's not like miserable, but it has that forced, "work" feel, very much like how I think that record feels. Still - seems like something fans should see.
I'm not opposed to sharing it to the people here who are interested, but I can't be burning and mailing a ton of DVDRs or anything like that, and I don't wanna piss anyone off if his camp doesn't want it out there. I wonder if I rip it and did a private YouTube video or something for a couple weeks? Ideas?

What the film that was shown the 20-30-min version available online, or was this longer? The entire film is 28 minutes. It is not currently available online...only the excerpts that you see in this thread.

Yeah, a recent article said that it was 28 minutes.
Private viewing sounds wonderful. I'll bring popcorn.

This sounds familiar to me, too. Was this dvd traded under the name 'Seeing Thru Paul'?

Capitol Records might own it. It would explain why there's never been a full official release. Paul has talked about how the guy at Capitol who championed him and promised that he would put all his weight into pushing the album, left the company before the album came out. And Capitol definitely wouldn't have any reason to release it now.

Gives us "die-hards" that come here a chance to see it.
