So mail came today (Saturday) and nothing from Rhino. I wanted to support Rhino for releasing it by ordering it thru them - even if it meant that OUTRAGEOUS $10.99 shipping - but this is UNACCEPTABLE.
Coulda ordered on Amazon for $60 shipped. I paid close to $100 on Rhino months ago and don't even have the damn thing.
Not to mention the annoying and confusing bi-weekly alerts the past few WEEKS from my credit card that Rhino kept charging my card over and over and over again. Total amateur hour from this company.
No email from Rhino either. Won't get burned by Rhino again.

Bummer to hear from Tommy that “[Paul’s] really checked out of it right now. He really doesn’t want a whole lot to do with any of it.” Explains the radio silence, but come on Paul! Think the reunion messed him up? Hasn’t talked with Tommy in two years?! Doesn't surprise me a bit. Westerberg is following Alex Chilton's career track of resenting his watershed band, an almost feeling of contempt for it (even though Alex did tour as Big Star). One would think that since he wrote 99% of the songs, he would try to protect the legacy of his music, like a Jimmy Page. It sounds like he had zero input into the DTAS box release, could care less. A real shame. I agree with others that Rhino really dropped the ball in regards to those who pre-ordered early. Every pre-order I have done thru Amazon have come on time, on the day of the official release, the latest one of Abbey Road delivered yesterday.

Mine shows shipped, en-route/on the way, and arriving Tuesday, so at least some have actually gone out, albeit late. Rhino dropped the ball, it's a bummer, but I'm not sure they have a track record of messing these things up. I've had mostly (but not always) positive experiences with pre-orders. Still will be nice to have the cassette (though I won't even open it), and it was nice to get those 2 songs digitally anyway. Can't say I wouldn't do the pre-order again given the chance if the incentive is decent. Shit happens, at least we got the files.
I remember a DBT pre-order a few years back where they really pushed the pre-order, then on release day, if you got it from a mom & pop store you got a bonus 8?-song CD. Fans who did the pre-order were furious. The next day they issued an apology, admitted that they'd F'd up, and sent everyone the bonus tracks digitally.

I ordered to support Rhino for releasing this.....had I known, I would've gone to Jack's Music Shoppe here in NJ to have picked it up...could've supported local merchants instead. I think its the same package as I preordered. To me, preorders should be treated "special", what's the point in preordering if not? Crying over something this trivial is annoying but such a fan....wanted to get. Painful to see people in the UK even have this before folks in US. Agree 100% too on shipping comment. They can take the 15% back for future orders, won't be ordering direct from them in future. I'm sure UPS will deliver the package at 11:59:59 PM on day it's to arrive.

Shit happens, at least we got the files. I don't have the files as I didn't receive the email others received offering the download. The tracking says it will arrive Tuesday now however. Have emailed Rhino customer service twice since Friday evening and no reply as of yet...

“They’re Blind” might’ve been my least favorite Replacements song before. But now...
Slim’s guitar! What the fuck was Chris Lord-What’s-His-Name thinking?

While I'm miffed too that Rhino "gummed up the works" with the pre-orders, at least they've made an effort to make it right. The emails, if you received them, with download codes, discounts and apologies are a nice consolation. Have you ever pre-ordered anything from Domino Records? This kind of delay happens every time with them, and without a peep of an apology. Like others have said, it's frustrating how, when you want to support the artist as directly as possible, Amazon is simply more reliable and, from my vantage, has–hands down–the best customer service. At any rate, pre-ordering should be a guarantee of receiving the record before anyone else!

What other songs are standing out to you all? I miss the typewriter and morse code intro of "We'll Inherit the Earth," but I love the "want it want it want it" and "on it on it on it" ad libs that were buried or cut from the original. Kinda miss the middle bridge (?) section with Paul mumbling about whales, too. The added lyrics at the end ("it ain't never gonna happen!") are telling... Jury still out on the reimagined tracklist? Think I still prefer the original after all. Loved how the record ended on "Darlin' One." Just gave that song I kind of epic gravitas that I miss. I think "I'll Be You" might have made for a great opener...

"They're Blind" is my new highlight track on the album. The way the piano walks you up into that amazing solo and then the guitars linger through the end of the song...and the grit and feedback that brings out the choruses...it adds a new gravitas to the idea behind the lyrics and the Mats being a band that is overlooked. Sort of like a new bookend to their career with this reawakening.
Personally I love the new tracklist. I prefer "Rock N Ghost" more as the closing, it was sort of a slog on the old version half way through...gives a new poignancy, with obvious call backs to "Here Comes A Regular."
I'm amazed that this might be my favorite produced Replacement records. The cool but subtle instrumentation on songs like "We'll Inherit the Earth" and "Back to Back" really make them pop and keep me listening for new discoveries. Love the horns and xylophone. And the rockers in "I Won't" and "Anywhere is Better than Here" are way less cheesy...feel more in line with "Lay it Down Clown" or don't make me miss them not being swapped out for the superior "Wake Up" or "Til We're Nude."

Also this is some of Mats' most inspired drumming. Some really cool choices on "They're Blind" (which Wallace played) and "I Won't." And "Last Thing in the World" sounds unlike any other Replacement song drum-wise...the verses almost sound like a double-kick number.

Haven't dug into this too deep yet, but the bits I've heard, based on the comments and on my own, are making me so happy. It's exactly how I wished it sounded when spinning it for the very first time in '89(!).

I’ve received the download emails from Rhino, but my order still hasn’t shipped.
After a few listens I love everything about Dead Man’s Pop. Matt Wallace’s mix is revelatory! New sounds have been revealed, the songs can now breathe and it sounds like The Mats. Paul and Slim’s guitars soar and Chris and Tommy Swing. I agree with bside about Chris’ drumming, love his playing on this.
There’s a few stand outs for me so far, They’re Blind now sounds incredible, the underlying sound during the chorus I’m not sure if it’s Slim’s guitar or what, but I love it, reminds a little of Big Star’s third, at least sonically. Achin To Be sounds even better, Slim’s country licks, the sound of the drums, it just sounds so natural and organic. We’ll Inherit The Earth has gone from unlistenable to an energised, anthemic rush. Darlin One, Back to Back are awesome and I like that the album closes with Rock N Roll Ghost. Not sure how, but the song sounds more poignant and emotional with this new mix. If I’m being honest, practically every track is a favourite.
The Second disc is good fun. Dance On My Planet is a favourite so far. Who? - I get a little Lou Reed vibe from that one too. Hearing the Tom Waits session is fun. Great to be a fly on the wall, I’d heard it before but it’s great to get it here too. There’s some Exile on Main St vibes around that session. I almost expect the boys to break out Sweet Virginia.
I blasted the shit out of the live show, my poor neighbours. What a concert. Just great, honest to goodness, messy Rock N Roll. Knocked back a couple of beers on first listen.

Couple of bold claims in this review. I wont spoil it. "it’s probably every fan’s fourth- or fifth-favorite Replacements album — almost without fail, really, no matter which three or four they place ahead of it. But there’s a pretty good chance this box set will move it up to, like, No. 2" I mean, there are opinions, but this is just factually wrong. "“Don’t Tell a Soul” was very arguably the best single collection of songs ever written by Paul Westerberg..." This guy is wild.

I find it interesting that Don't Tell a Soul is nearly universally considered the weakest album, but it seems that no one can agree on what particular songs are bad. Everyone loves Talent Show, but after that it's a crapshoot, even more so if you add in the outtakes and what should have replaced what. I never thought DTAS was completely terrible, but just an 'okayish' album. The original mix bumps it up to good/great.
Going in to this, I'd say that "They're Blind" and "Achin' to Be" were definitely my least favorite Replacements songs. Always thought they were a little cloying, the 'run to me' part in "They're Blind" is grating to me. This new mix does alot to salvage those two songs, and improve on others from before. Though I prefer Paul's vocals on "Achin' to be Be" from the bearsville session, as it sounds like some kid in highschool explaining his crush on some girl without trying to sound too committed. The only thing I miss from the original mix is the maelstrom of words in the middle of "Inherit the Earth". It's a fun little exercise to go back and listen to DTAS and try to hear the parts that were previously covered up.

Just listened to the Matt Wallace version while mowing the lawn. Holy christ....They're Blind!? I'm almost pissed. This is what could've been released 30yrs ago.
DTAS has always held a firm place in steady rotation over the years, whenever I went on a Mats binge, or the mood just struck. It was the first record of theirs that I bought as a new release (turned on to them after PTMM was reviewed in RS) and I still remember, vividly, the disappointment after the first listen. On the strength of MTV's playing I'll Be You (which I consider one of the songs on that album closest to their true sound), I expected much more. It grew on me quickly anyways, and I played it A LOT back then. But THIS.....you can hear the amps! Asking Me Lies finally fits in!
You can hear the growth in writing and form, in the arrangements and playing by each member. Who knows if the suits thought that the growth needed to be more of a drastic departure; wouldn't have been heard without a slickening, and therefore brought in Chris L-A. I think it's evident without the slick, it's right there. Whatever, this version makes so much more sense and, although it's pointless to look back, I can't help but wonder what new fans would've been made by hearing the authenticity of it. Better late than never!
