"...every Replacements album needs a boneheaded stomper, and the relentlessly dumb boogie of ‘I Won’t’ fulfils that criteria here."
I love that song. Apart from Talent Show, it's the second most played track off the album for me. Anywhere's Better Than Here is the boneheaded stomper in my book.

Thanks for starting the thread mike529! Good idea.
Also, I interviewed Bob Mehr and Matt Wallace for a lil' sneak-peek of the record that'll be posted to the PaulWesterberg.com homepage sooner than later! Will post a link here, too, as soon as it's up.

Listening to KEXP radio in Seattle this past week, they are playing some tracks form the new box set. I heard "Back to Back" and "Last Thing in the World". The later sounded really amazing. It fit right in with "Wake Up" and "Portland". A real rocker. It felt like a live take, kind of a ruckus jumble. Cant want to hear it again when the box comes.

Hey nice piece there. Really captures what was wrong with the original release, and why this project is so important. A couple thoughts: “[it’s exactly] what Nirvana did a few years later with Nevermind.” - I don't subscribe to this thought. Nevermind doesn't sound nearly as dated as DTAS. One positive thing the grunge movement did was to strip bands of the "goo" that the 80s added. It made rock and roll real again. Nevermind is polished, sorta like American Idiot would be a little over a decade later, but gone was (most of) the over-used reverb and chorus and other crap that took the edge off of albums in the 80s. Bands sounded like bands again. As Westerberg reveals in Mehr’s liner notes, “to write real pop music in that era, you were dead.” - so there's input from the band on the tracks and the albums in the liner notes?
I'd love to hear Paul's vocals on Ol' 55 someday. I hope that surfaces.
I'm seeing things like "the album that ruined the replacements" and all that. I think The Replacements ruined The Replacements, and DTAS (and some of the touring/appearances afterwards) were more of an effect than a cause. Another set of bad decisions, bad behavior, and the conflict between the outright fear of success and a short-sighted attempt to "swing for the fences" (as the article says) to achieve the very success they'd built a career running from. In hindsight it was a disaster in the making. The songs from Paul are there (for the most part) but they threw away what made the band great, and that was the kiss of death, and DTAS is the document of all that.
I can't wait to get it.

That's a great write-up, Connor. Thanks all! Re: Bob Mehr's Nirvana quote – I agree, but he was referring more to the record-producing style of having an "indie guy" produce and a "pro guy" mix, like how Geffen/DGC recruited Andy Wallace to mix Nevermind after Butch Vig produced it.

Aah - thanks for the clarification. I see that now. Fun personal fact about DTAS and Matt Wallace - when they opened the tour in Ann Arbor in March of `89, I saw their tour buses at the hotel near the place I worked. I went home, looked on the back of the album, then called the hotel to ask if they'd checked in yet, saying I was "Matt Wallace from Sire Records." After a short silence she said they hadn't but they were expected shortly. We were there to greet them as they arrived. I was not Matt Wallace.

I want to know if the LP has "Portland" etched in the inner vinyl.
