most of the stuff i track down on youtube I purchase. See the bands live, hit the merch table. I'd have to say that I support the music industry in a very healthy way. CD = petroleum. Much less so. Ban those too IMHO. I am a bit the same way, hear a good band , pick up their CD. CDs ruining the environment? Well then fuck it someone else will just have to buy a Prius to compensate..

...I recognize convenience in format as a barrier to the LP in my experience... For sure. Hard to argue that vinyl is not a convenient format. Digital music absolutely has it's place - MP3s or streaming music are a necessity for me when traveling, working, driving, working out, etc. Even at home I'll often have the PC speakers going. But when it comes to actually, truly listening to music at home, that's when we fire up the turntable, most often on weekends or weeknight evenings. Part of the joy of vinyl is that effort though - pulling out the record, giving it the occasional cleaning, flipping it between sides. It contributes to making the music you're listening to the focus, not the background. It's just not a viable solution when you're driving on an expressway. I find MP3s that are 320 or even 256 are usually tolerable through whatever device I'm using to listen to them. There's no doubt that a CD is better, but I can live with higher quality MP3s when I'm on the go. I really start to notice when they get to 192. They say iTunes is 256, and Spotify is 320. To my ears Spotify sounds ok, but iTunes is a noticeable drop.

CDs, radio, podcasts, streaming. I’ll listen to the music shows on NPR for variety and new bands. I stream a new station in LA with a weak signal, and the Current from Minnesota. The LA station will play at least one LA band per hour and is fairly drenched in that Topanga Canyon sound. They are into message and melody. Good stuff. 88.5 FM
