"Ain't Got Me" with the line "I'm the last of a dying breed/'cause you ain't got me" and eased the disappointment of Paul giving in but in a way he doesn't. If you listen carefully toward the end, he sings "you ain't got me ... yet!" Always got a chuckle out of that.

I must be the odd duck around here, I love that album! It has made it into my D.I.D. collection. I read so much personal stuff into many of the lyrics on that album. It is one of the records that I wish I could have wrote. Mamadaddydid tops the list. I know what it's like to have parents that really don't want to be involved in your life. Good day, I relate that to my stepdad passing away, Angels walk reminds me of a kid at our church that walked down the isle during confermation two days after his dad was killed in a traffic accident. What else can I say, the whole record rocks.

Another fan of that album though I like the first half much better than the second. It's a bit uneven but Century, Love Untold and Ain't Got Me, You've Hade It With You are four of my favorite PW songs and collective contain everything I love about the guy.
Of course, I always heard the line in You've Had It With You as "Like Catherine the Great underneath a big horse, the sexual reference is me of course" - not quite right but always the way I'll sing it.

Anyone game to attempt to explain that Catherine the Great line?
And since others have asked about SG, the line in Sunrise that's never worked for me (though I just reread it and it looks better than it sounds) is the skywriter/balloon bit. Anyone want to try to make me appreciate it more?

Anyone game to attempt to explain that Catherine the Great line? It was rumored that Catherine the Great was injured while attempting a romantic act with a horse. And since others have asked about SG, the line in Sunrise that's never worked for me (though I just reread it and it looks better than it sounds) is the skywriter/balloon bit. Anyone want to try to make me appreciate it more? Personally, I think that "Sunrise Always Listens" is the worst song he's ever written. He actually sounds like he gets sick of singing it about halfway through.

I see this album as one of his best with only three weak songs ie. Century, Good Day ( which starts out great but completely implodes near the end) and Time Flies Tomorrow. There are some classics such as the opener These Are The Days which still raises the hairs on the back of my neck when the final chorus wails in with the line "let me introduce some friends of mine". Angels Walk is in the top 5 songs he ever wrote and is produced impeccably. Trumpet Clip could have fit on a Faces album or even the Bash and Pop record by Tommy Stinson. Love Untold should have been more reckless sounding however. It would be interesting to hear a Grandpaboy version of that song. This album is still better than Suicane Gratification and equal if not better than 14 Songs. But what do I know...

I like Good Day. Maybe it's just sappy sentiment cuz it's about/for Bob, but I do. He's been Dead what 9 years a couple of days ago? Plus the reference to "hold my life" is cool.

I really like "Good Day" too, but I can understand why some don't. Many of Paul's piano parts are uncomfortably close to what you'd find in a bad showtune. The one-handed piano thing was great for "Androgynous" and Paul pulled some real chops out of his ass for "Self Defense", but "Good Day" has that cloying major-chord plinking that drives some people crazy. It's only really bothered me on "Never Felt Like This Before", but that only lasts a minute, so I'm not going to complain.

Paul pulled some real chops out of his ass for "Self Defense" Talk about a concealed weapon. Somebody buy him a handgun. Many of Paul's piano parts are uncomfortably close to what you'd find in a bad showtune. Paul should just go with it and write a show tune. Heck, write a damn show. He leans that way anyway, lyrically and musically and even vocally sometimes, so go with it. He seems to have a sense of what Tin Pan Alley was ("Strike Up the Band" being a classic of that genre). He would have been right at home there. Meet Paul halfway Down the Tin Pan Alley, I say. He's a popster.

Paul writing a musical..... Frankly I can't see him writing anything that someone would burst into while speaking. His stuff is too realistic, in my opinion. And the concept kinda makes me think of Styx and their bat shit insane lead guy. Wasn't it Mr.Roboto or some shit like that? If Paul goes that type of insane, I'm volunteering myself to be thrown into a volcano or eviscerated with a ballpoint pen. Unless it turns out cool like that Buffy musical...
Am I the only one who likes "MamaDaddyDid" ? I've always really liked that song. It has a certain mood that always makes me want to go give him a hug.
Faith See, I can stay on topic...

Overall, I think it's more consistant than SG, where, as someone sort of said, some songs sound a bit forced. The rockers on SG are near-great but don't seem as sincere as usual. Like he said, perhaps he saw it as his last hurrah at being a commercial star. But his heart was already in the basement.
Do people know if he was happy with his 14 Songs producer?

Do people know if he was happy with his 14 Songs producer? I think Matt Wallace produced it, didn't he? In which case Paul apparently liked him enough to use him as his bass player for the tour although not enough to use him as a producer again for Eventually.

I like this thread because almost everyone has had something interesting or personal to say. I bought Eventually on cassette when it came out ( I was still buying cassettes in 1996 - what a loser). I didn't really like it too much. My favorite then was MamaDaddyDid (and still is). That song made the hair on my arms and neck stand up the first time I heard it. The rest of the album kind of left me flat though and I eventually (pun intended) put the cassette in a box and forgot about it. Until... Kathy put up the MP3's of the Troubador show and after I heard "Century" I was like, "Shit! I have to buy this album again!!" So I bought it used for $3.99 (on CD!!) and I appreciate it so much more now. Stand out tracks for me are the two I've mentioned of course and "Once Around the Weekend" and "Love Untold". I only started to love the latter after the amazing performance Paul gives of it on the CFMT DVD.

Looks like the best way to get into this album was via cassette - someone taped it for me in 96 and I discovered it in 2001. Just in time to get ready for S/M. I've since found it secondhand (very rare in Aus.).
His next album was the GB EP. Not to start another thread, but that is great.

Eventually will always be a great memory for me. That year it was my job to drive my 4-5 year old son to pre-school on the way to work, so he heard this CD on the way there, and oftern on the way home. He always snickered when he heard the line about "god damn kid" in mamadaddydid to where he would sing along but say *beep* during the unpermitted language. We had our first discussion about correct lyrics (TTBO), when he thought "skeleton key" from Had it with You was scarecrow key. Finally, like I mentioned somewhere earlier, when he wasn't playing enough for his basketball team THIS year at age 13, he said remember that Westerberg song, well "I'm the player, that no one needs". You can imagine the twisted pride I felt when he starts quoting PW lines! Now he wants me to buy him an electric guitar, so I guess he will be down in the basement too!

"Would like to find it on cd but don't often run across Paul's stuff used - as far as I see it that's because people tend to hang on to it, which is actually a good thing (albeit frustrating when wanting to find something while on a tight budget) " Um, there this little place called Ebay, and you can update your collection there.

I always see used copies of Eventually and 14 Songs, usually cheap. Usually with a "Nice Price" sticker plastered over Paul's face. I believe the Warner's stuff is still in print, so it wouldn't be too hard if you feel like splurging. There's also this place on line called Amazon that has lots of cds, you may have heard of it.
