Although I would LOVE to hear some new songs, I agree that if the new "Replacements" recordings aren't up to snuff they shouldn't release them; at least not as Replacements songs. That said, I would love to hear a full album of tunes in the vein of "message to the boys" which it seems that this band could pull off in their sleep. And new songs would likely give the new Replacements, if they still exist, a sense of purpose. 3 years of touring only the back catalog must get old.
Paul never seems to come up empty in the songwriting department, so it seems more likely than not that he is not "dried up." I don't for a second believe that "whole food blues" and "poke me in my cage" were anything other than throwaways.
Awhile back someone posted a video of Paul playing a new tune (not "whole food blues") on this last tour, but I can't seem to find it. It seemed like a legit song to me. Does anyone remember or have the link for this?

Does anyone remember or have the link for this? Is this maybe the song? I always thought this song was bit overlooked by this board. It seemed like a new song, played once on the whole tour at the DC show, seemed pretty heart-felt and had a solid melody. Was a good sign of things to come. Maybe that's how it's going to exist--in our collective memories and via cell phone video capture.

maybe, just maybe, PW is dried up and not sitting on a ton of good songs. I think he is...They may not be good songs he's written in the last year, but from the last ten years? I think probably so...

I think there was good material in the basement releases, it just needed a little polish and love to be listenable. IMO,he feels dried up as a touring, full-time, road and studio musician, but he likely has a lot of songs that people would love to hear.

I'm all over the place...I loved the "basement" period...Great songs...I thought it was the right presentation for those songs (though maybe it went on a little too long)..."S/M" and "CFMT", I think, are very near the pinnacle of anything he ever did...I don't care if the drums are fucked up and tape runs out...I guess what I wanted (and, really, what matters more than what I personally wanted? What Paul wants? Get outta here with that shit!) was Paul and Tommy, with Josh and Dave, bash out a little farewell "record" (and let's call it that, a "record") recorded over a weekend, mostly live with minimal overdubs, of, maybe, ten songs...Couple of Tommy's, four Paul's, and four badass covers...Then Paul can retire...He just needs an archivist to go through all the shit we've never heard and say: "Goddamn! There's like twenty albums here! People would pay for all of this crap!" Except, of course, the archivist is gonna go in there, and there's like one reel-to-reel tape from 1986..."You were writing and recording during the last thirty years, right?" "Yeah, but I ran outta tape, so I just kept using this same one over and over"...

If the Whole Foods song and that uninspired 30 minute jam are the sort of things they got up their sleeve, it’s probably best they just leave things as they are and focus on their individual projects. Spot on. That Whole Foods thing was horrible. I think it's pretty telling when PW can no longer pen a clever, goofy toss-off song.

I just hope Slim got a bunch of that reunion tour money. Paul owes him big time.

Just chiming in that I thought Whole Foods Blues was hilarious and very 'Mats. Not sure how come the couple mentions of it here are so negative.

Check out the Tommy videos from 9/10 over on the We Love The Mats page on Facebook...specifically Never Aim To Please and listen to what he says while tuning his guitar before the song starts. I think he is a little bitter about the Mats last run,as he probably should be.

Did any of you really think they would last as long as they did? We had 2 years of great stuff from them. I think we were very lucky to get anything past the 3 Riot Fest shows. To me everything after that (I.E. shows, videos, pics) was a bonus. I'm sure they had fun, at least it looked like it.

Tommy Stinson performs in The Current studios www.thecurrent.org/feature/2015/09/13/tommy-stinson-performs-in-the-current-studios"All the shows we played had an element of being emotional rollercoasters," said Stinson about the reunion. "I had a ball with it," he remembers, "and had some moments afterwards that weren't so great, where I'm like, 'Jesus, I feel like I'm going to either jump out a window or just start crying.'"
Acknowledging that the reunion "probably lasted a little longer than we thought" it would, Stinson explained that when it came to bringing the band's reprise run to a close, "the real cutoff was really going to be when we stopped having fun with it."
"Or when Paul ran out of t-shirts," noted McGuinn.
Stinson paused, then responded, "You said it, not me." He then admitted, "That kind of bummed me out when I figured it what that was. I'm like, 'Man, I'm not hearing those little violins.' We had fun, we got paid. What's that all about?"

we're doomed. this is not a new emotion. but more of the same, given the ever whimsical state of affairs. are they done. are they not. it's all on paul, and that's a roulette bet that's more than likely to come up zeros, no payoff. shrug. we've got far more to mine than u2 fans still believing their bands actually relevant. the stumblebums win again by unraveling just when we think they're on to something. hail the losers. i'll take that. it's better than watching the ghosts to mosts selling out. the legend grows and devolves. could we expect anything less.

I don't know. I find the whole thing a real bummer. When I saw them at the first Riot Fest show in Toronto it was absolute magic. There's no other way to describe it. The band was so eager, giddy and HAPPY. Watching the clips from this last run, I didn't see that. And that's a real shame. A break from touring and then an album release could have carried that momentum. If your heart's not in it then stepping away is the right decision - but that's no consolation to the fans.
