Why make a web site and a mailing list subscription if they didn't at least have plans for doing something more? I suppose setting up a web site and subscription list would be a cheap way of gauging demand for more Replacements stuff, but Paul and Tommy never seemed to make decisions based on demand. Maybe they have some intent of carrying on, and maybe they'll change their minds, but at least for now this is good enough evidence for me to hold out hope.

My own theory? To a man, the lads have admitted that they never made much money being Replacements. Then they held out for over 20 years while offers to reunite came regularly - bigger then better then best. Then one came up they couldn't refuse. So all those years at minimum wage, and then in three weekends - the f'n lottery. I'm not sure I buy the minimum-wage-to-f'n-lottery analogy, mainly because I don't think Riot Fest was the highest bidder they could have gone with, and also because I think Paul has been paid better than he lets on. If you read Laurie Lindeen's memoir, she describes Let It Be/Tim-era Paul as a well-to-do bookish recluse living in a forested modern minimalist mansion. If they were truly wanting to cash in then they would have done Coachella.

This thread is bumming me out. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I'm guessing they lay low through the holidays. Then in 2014 they embark on a big city tour or do some more recording and release an album. Or perhaps both. I'm right there with you.

Plus, the band made a middle finger out of lights. Come on, what's the thing gonna do? Collect dust in "Pee-Dubs" basement or suburban MPLs garage? I dont think so. That thing will be back.

I believe part of Paul's reluctance to hit the road in the recent past has a bit to do with his desire to be home raising his son. At a certain point the kids don't really want you around as much as you want to be around them. That could be a gentle nudge towards the road.

This is the best justification for further shows that I have seen thus far in this thread. And it makes perfect sense. You don't just make a giant middle finger and leave it in storage.

I live less than 2 miles from Paul and I have a pretty normmal home. His house is certainly nicer than mine and it's in a slightly better hood but I wouldn't describe it as a forested modern minimalist mansion. I am guessing he is probably comfy (pure speculation as nonthere is no way to know) but that they chose the RiotFest gigs for the reasons they have laid out. I also think he's a pretty proud papa and wants to hang with his son. That said, I believe he still wants to rock 'n roll, had fun with the three gigs they played and they will play more gigs. No way they went through all this for 3 gigs. I also believe Slim's situation fired them up to seize this opportunity to get out there. Not to brag but Chris Mars lives one block from me in a real normal home. Slim, Paul and Chris all live within 3 miles of each other.

That's not the same house that Lindeen describes in Petal Pusher. In the book, Lindeen is contrasting the way she perceived Paul when they first met (pre-success) to the Paul that she later fell in love with (post-success). That may have been a moment-in-time as Paul was transitioning to a major label lifestyle, because Lindeen goes on to describe a few ups and downs with their living situation. I can't recall the exact timeline, but I'm pretty sure that Paul has talked about moving back into his parent's house after his first marriage ended. So his fortunes have probably risen and fallen just like most people involved in an artistic career. My point was that I don't think Riot Fest was a lottery-level cash in that made up for a lifetime of penny pinching.

I'm sure Paul makes a steady income from music sales, songwriting and publishing royalties. Probably not "rich," but comfortable enough to spend most of the last decade in the basement doing what he pleases. I've never pictured PW as someone who made decisions that were dictated by money. Not when he was poor and struggling, and not now that he can sustain a desired lifestyle for himself and his family. Paul does what Paul wants.

...and hopefully Paul wants to get out and play some more gigs! The world is a better place when there are Replacements shows to attend. Twin Cities next?

Exactly, vonkresse! If Paul gets something out of touring around the country playing 25-30 year old songs with Tommy, he'll do it. If he doesn't, he won't.

And after the Twin Cities, hopefully he's still sorry to Portland.

Well, here's this reference and perspective from a recent interview with Peter Buck:
And how did you end up playing the guitar solo on the Replacements’ “I Will Dare”? You were just in the studio with them?
"Well, at one point I was supposed to produce the third record. And, you know, they only had about five songs, Steve Fjelstad is great; they didn’t really need a producer. So I just kind of hung out with them at night and got drunk. I had a couple little suggestions, and Bob Stinson had some kind of scorching solo and Paul was like, “I don’t know …” So I just kind of did it. It’s nice to be on there. It’s a great record."
They’re out there now doing it again now.
"I’ve heard good things, but it’s only been a couple shows."
I don’t think you start doing it again if you’re only going to do three shows, right?
"Well, one rock ‘n’ roll theory is you don’t rehearse more times than you’re going to play."

I would love to see them do a tour and keep the candle burning but in all honesty I went to Riot Fest with the fact in my mind that it would be my one and only chance to ever see The Replacements and it was perfect. If I never see them again, I will be happy because at least I got to see them once. If I do see them again, I certainly won't complain!
