Compare the dirge-like Nowhere Man on the Sam I Am soundtrack to the early live Mats version (the one where Paul keeps screaming "MMMUUUURRRDERRR!!!" on every song in the set) and there's absolutely no comparison. I can't remember the name of the boot off the top of my head, but it's a killer.

Its from the show at maxwells, hoboken n.j. in 1986. I posted the whole show in the thread titled 'unlimited uploads=complete shows' awhile back. One of the best bootlegs out there.

Seems fine, a few quibbles: ...And I have no idea what point they're getting at about Greg Kihn and Another Girl. The Mats were playing it long before but didn't release it until, what ... Don't Buy or Sell? Doesn't really seem like it was a race with Greg Kihn. When they said Greg Kihn "claimed" it first, they meant he was the first person to record a cover version (in 1986). He was playing it before then too. No biggie. A great song, that The "Mats totally nail.

There was a good version of "the Last Time" I wanted to include in that Video but sadly there were too many drop outs. The version of "gimme Shelter in the Video is from Detroit 1987.

Note at the end that Mars (?) asks if they want to do “‘Achin’ to Bleed’ [sic] for a bunch of nimrods.” Probably not the ideal crowd for a Mats set. -Jeremy D. Larson
I was one of the nimrods. Truth be told, they went over fairly well (better two years later under Elvis Costello). Connecticut was pretty good turf for the Replacements.
'87 PTMM - Toads Place: Packed past acceptable Fire Marshal standards '89 DTAS - Bushnell Auditorium: Sold Out, me thinks '91 ASD - Toads Place: See above (Uncle Tupelo opened)
Westerberg leveled the Globe in '93.
No Connecticut since.
I missed the show at the Grotto and the opening slot for REM at Toads Place. I still don't know why I didn't go to the Grotto that night.

There should be photos of the Grotto show ... one of the 50 or so people there was an older guy who was taking a ton of pictures. At Toad's place, a fan won a guitar in some kind of contest from the Mats, as unlikely as that sounds. I remember him sitting in a hallway crosslegged, kind of rocking back and forth, saying "Paul Westerberg is God." I wasn't at those other shows so we're complementary.
