I saw the Pixies last nite on Letterman. So it got me thinking, "If the Mats really did get back together, and they got booked to appear on national TV, what song would they play?"
Or better yet, what song SHOULD they play? The Pixies chose "Monkey Gone to Heaven". So would the Mats choose a song that was most familiar to everyone? If so, what would that be?

Ah man, that's a tough one...I've got about ten I've narrowed down that I'd love to hear...although I'd really like them to play 'Bastards of Young' just cuz Paul said we'd never hear it live again.

I would have to guess something off of Suicaine Gratifaction. It is pretty apparent it is the most important recorded music of all time.
How about the Actor song?

Yeah, I'm not sure which I would pick either. They probably wouldn't be sure either!

I'm thinking "I Will Dare" or "Can't Hardly Wait" would be what they'd play.
If it was my choice: "Talent Show."

So nobody else has any issue with the Pixies going on Letterman and playing a 15 year old song?
What was the point? To sell a few more copies of Doolittle?
Maybe the Replacements could play that Bookmark song on the television.

Bastards would fit and be pretty cool but for some reason I've got it stuck in my head that it would be Left of the Dial, which would be great in my opinion.

Just write a new song. If the Traveling Wilburys can do it, so could the Mats.

Handle With Care is my favorite Wilbury's song.
I don't get the "Just write a new song. If the Traveling Wilburys can do it, so could the Mats." comment though.

well, given that the Pixies pulled out an old tune to play, that's what got me thinking. If it ever became a reality, should the Mats do a new song versus an old familiar one? I'm also wondering if the TV people asked the Pixies to play something familiar and that's what they chose to do.
I don't necessarily mind hearing old stuff, it's just that I hope it wouldn't make them seem like an oldies act.

I think the song choice would be pretty obvious.
"Gary's Got A Boner", of course!
Still as relevant now as it was 20 years ago and it's located on arguably their most popular record.
What's not to like?

What's not to like? That'll be sure to bring the wrath of Powell and the FCC down on the Mats! They'll be box office poison again... ;D

they would clearly play "happy" by the rolling stones if given the chance on tv.

Haven't you all realized that the Mats (then and never-a-snowball's-chance-in-Iraq NOW) will ever play a song as predictable as I Will Dare or Can't Hardly Wait or Bastards. They've done BOY on SNL!
I think they should get the roadies that finished off "Hootenany" in Grant Park on 7/1/91 to start it off and then the Mats would finish it! It would be as if the damn song had been going on for 13 years and the Mats decided to cap it off.
I do like the idea of them playing "Gary's got a boner" and change the name "Dave", "Jay", "Conan", "Craig", "Jimmy" and even "Dr. Phil".... whoever will let them play on their show. What about "Lorne's (Michaels) got a boner"! Then whatever show they end up, their performance should be followed by a commercial for Viagra or Cialus! That would be classic !!
