But he also knows how devoted we are to him...and how much we miss him, don't you think? I’m not sure he does know, or what he would do with that information if he did. He may be too humble for it to register how valuable he is to some of his fans, not only as an entertainer but as a person. I've always felt too that he's got songs for almost any occasion or period of your life. He does!

I kinda think he knows or is aware of his own mythos and the kind of loyalty he and the Mats inspired. Now as to whether or not Darren or someone gives him feedback on what we say here on the board, that's just speculation on my part. he may not care one bit what we think. And he probably shouldn't, I guess. Still, I just kind of figure that it's human nature to want to get some feed back. Otherwise, you're working in a complete vacuum and that seems kind of lonely. I remember Pete Townshend said once that the thing he liked about touring was getting immediate feedback after releasing a new album. You didn't have to wait to see if the song is going to chart, or wait six months to find out if people are crazy or indifferent to it. He said you can see it right there in concert, which of the new songs the fans are cheering for. But hell, maybe Paul doesn't need feedback at all. He just throws the work that pleases him out there to the audience.

He just throws the work that pleases him out there to the audience. Well, since you put it that way (grin), I guess he does know. Intellectually, I think he must. In my prior post I was thinking more about how much Paul may be aware of the deep emotional attachment many of his fans have for him, not just his music. He has the kind of fans that would have to leave work because they could no longer function, if something were to ever happen to him. THAT kind of devotion is more what I was getting at. Many of us on this board would fall into this category! Feedback is important to him because he speaks of “testing the waters” in his interviews. He’s also said it really wouldn’t matter because he’s making the music he likes. I guess both statements are true then. Suddenly, I hear ‘Garden Party’ by Ricky Nelson in my head!

I recall an interview from the early 90's (I think) where he makes it clear that he knows the deep emotional impact his songs have on his fans -- because they've come up and told him stuff like you've saved my life or you got me through a really rough patch.
And I recall that his reaction was being flattered, but a little freaked out by it, too. His personal life has been far from perfect at times, so having people consider him to be their savior of sorts was a bit much to bear... which is understandable.

Great song! This will probably lead to the Goo Goo Dolls,Green Day,Hold Steady,Deer Tick and The Rolling Stones recording a piano ballad for their new albums, replete with pre and/or post song studio chatter.

Awwwwwe, this is so cool....it's like an unexpected visit from a dear old friend you didn't know was in the area! It's not even about if the song is good or not (of course it is!) A song from Paul is like a get-well card, a care package, oxygen to someone with the bends....Thanks for sharing, Paul! I happen to relate to the lyrics in a couple of ways, so it's one more thing to hold on to, one more thing to stack in the "good" column, one more moment where I felt validated in the feelings I've been having, and had on our move from Va out to Colorado...This could have been the theme song of our drive out west! Again, thanks, Paul, for sharing. I am also having a tough time getting songs to come out. Constipated Writer Blues...eh? Be right back! (Actually, it's more like depression and no ability to concentrate on anything for long that is my problem...) Look! Brandon Crawford!

My first thought this morning was: Paul's new song! Made it just that much easier to get up;at least I had that one thing to look forward to! And although I only listened a couple of times yesterday, as I ran down the steps this morning , I had the chorus going through my head. Paul's still got it, will always "have it" and will share with us as he pleases...I'm glad he decided to share. But why for free? I mean, we would all gladly pay for the download, but for me, personally, it would have been a "luxury" that I would have had to wrestle with myself over...and I hate when that happens. But seriously, why? Anyway, I'm glad, and grateful! : )

I think its probably about The Replacements & us the fans who keep wondering if he'll ever put out more music, and whatever is pissing him off at the moment.
I know you read this board. Another great job!!
About damn time Westerberg.

What are the chances this started as a song for "Open Season"?

The Current in MPLS played "My Road Now" on the radio this morning. They included his "all right, got through one" comment at the end, but I could swear they'd turned that up a bit. Maybe I was just surprised to hear it.
