Any connection with Paul anytime anywhere? I'am reading "Life" KR's bio. Pretty damn good.
What about Paul rippin' out some Chuck Berry? Of course in his own sloppy way, since thats what he seems to like nowadays. Just rippin' sweaty R-N-R.

The Replacements opened a show for Keith Richard's solo band back in 1988 for a one shot thing..I believe Paul has stated in interviews that he talked to him briefly.. As for Chuck Berry..I don't think anybody can play in a band and NOT do some Chuck Berry every once in a while.. I'm sure Paul is no exception...Didn't the Mats used to insert the Johnny B Goode riff into Talent Show? CF

After the PW and HOF show at SF's Great American Music Hall I was fortunate to get to meet with Paul and talk with him at his bus. Music was coming from inside the bus and when the Stone's/Richards's song "Happy" started playing, Paul turned and pleaded, "Can you turn that up?" I acknowledged the song by saying, "Keith!" Paul shook his head solomnly and said, "I love Keith Richards."
Definitely a big influence.

I'm a little bit into the book as well, it's really a fascinating view into his life and the music.
But also, in "All Over But the Shouting" by Jim Walsh, Slim recounts how Keith was going around taking Polaroid pics of himself with everyone. But I thought I read somewhere that Paul said he sought Keith out to get the picture.

I knew there was an influence. You can hear it. Too bad KR is not into Paul more, or at all, and include him in some projects. It would be very cool if KR played lead on some of PW (Grandpa Boy) blues songs. We need to start up a campaign for this.
Maybe if Westerberg would get off his ass and do some proper studio music?? As it stands Im getting tired of the basement stuff. I like it, but its "High Time" for something REALLY good with some REALLY good musicians. I bet the good ones would be standing in line to play with him.
Excuses, Excuses, Excuses, I'm sick of them. BE A MUSICIAN WESTERBERG!!! Lots of older known cats are playing, if even in their hometown. Sorry about the rant.......(sort of)

(sort of) Maybe not lead, per se, but definitely the "ancient art of weaving!" Stylistically, it would be a perfect match. Just not sure if KR would be listening/traveling in PW's circles anymore. But it's definitely a match...

I, too, am into the KR book and loving it. It's hard to put it down.
I saw the `mats play Happy on the Petty tour, which was hot.
Plus Paul uses a lot of the open tunings like Keith does. Open G, A and E for example. Keith wasn't the first or only one to do it, but he certainly took it to a new place, and really started exploring it as they just started to hit their peak in the late 60s. I would bet Paul took some of that influence as he started using those tunings as well.

OK, this thought is way out in left field but it just popped in my head as I was reading this thread.
I've heard rumors that the Stones are going to fire Ron Wood over his recent exploits (stangling teenage girlfriend; falling off the wagon big time). Wouldn't it be mind boggling if PW were to replace him for this 50th anniversary tour? That would be some weaving!
I know, WTF am I smoking . . ..

During the brief period that The Replacements were a trio I heard a rumor that Keith was going to join. He was on the outs with The Rolling Stones (MJ) and the Mats needed a second guitarist. Now this was in the days that a good rumor took some legwork to get off the ground. I heard it got quashed because people would just go to shows for KR and not the band. Anyone hear this?
I did see the KR show that the Mats opened in NJ. They were quite amazing. It was a couple of months (12/17/1988) before DTAS was released. Is there a boot of this show?

It's possible that I'm completely making this up, but I seem to remember reading or hearing about the X-Pensive Winos or maybe Keith with the Stones doing "Knocking On Mine" during a soundcheck. This thread stirred a very vague memory of this, and again, maybe I'm combining this with some other long (nearly) forgotten memory. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

I had heard that one of the Stones' producers--maybe it was Don Was?--played 14 Songs during breaks from recording.
And when Stereo came up, Paul mentioned in an interview that Keith said hello and sent his best wishes via a mutual friend.

Here's Paul's liner notes quote on that one from "Besterberg": "Don Was told me that Keith [Richards] used to listen to it first thing in the studio at full volume. My imitation of the master must have struck a chord (Asus9)."
