P.S. Bill, no offense to your list but none of these movies are what I would consider a great rock documentary...I would go so far as to say a few of them were downright boring even for a fan of the band. Even Westway, about what is arguably my second favorite band, is good only for its collection of footage. It is NOT a good film. My idea of a great rock doc is I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART, THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON, or even SOME KIND OF MONSTER (about a band I could care less about, but it was a GREAT film). Why? Conflict! The essence of every great story.
This film will NOT be about the fans. The film will be about the band and the impact they had on others. Good AND bad. The point of reference will be the band's music which viewers can then discover for themselves.
I am trying to break the mold by doing something different. I don't know of any other band doc which plays not a lick of their subject's music, or shows not one image of the band. But instead gives them God-like treatment. God-like, in that, people believe in God without seeing him/her or hearing his/her voice...yet there's a lot of disagreement (conflict!) about God...hmmm...a few wars even come to mind.
Come along for the ride, or not...but I'm pretty good at finding the conflict in every story. And there's a lot to be found here...(a few wars even!)

OK...we've set up this KickStarter page to try and raise some additional funds to help with things like travel...
So, get involved now, pre-order a DVD...or a poster...
Or better yet, become an Executive Producer!
Find out how here:
P.S. If you know anyone else who might be interested, please pass on the link.

So you're not going to use any of their music in the film? If that's really what you're planning, no offense, but I'm not sure how likely people will be to check out their music without hearing any of it first. I mean, I love the mats for who they were and everything they did, but it's not worth anything without their music. But then again you might be onto something, because I decided to check them out cuz I thought Tommy Stinson was sexy. Although I AM a teenage girl with obscure taste. That's just my two cents. As an aspiring independent filmmaker, I wish you success in this project.
Have you tried getting Peter Jesperson and Paul Stark involved? I'm sure they'd have something interesting to contribute.

I'm guessing the reason you went the "fan" route is because you couldn't get rights to the music. I hope you do get some music in here too. Without the music it loses a lot of appeal. And where's your "conflict" going to come from? Fans' conflicting memories of Bob/ opinions of Paul/ how they feel about Guns and Roses?

Hey Minnesota Replacements fans, here's your chance to get your story in the movie: if you're in the Twin Cities area, and have seen the Replacements, played with them, booked them, loved them, hated them, and want to talk about the band in front of a camera, send an email to janradder@yahoo.com with the subject line "COLOR ME OBSESSED."
A few things to answer a few of the above posts:
1. the film will only cover the period from their very start through to 7/4/91...nothing beyond...
2. I'm making the film I want to make...the lack of music is a huge part of what intrigues me as a filmmaker...I wouldn't be making this film otherwise. As I've explained I have no interest in making a VH1 special. I wanted to make something that hopefully stands alone...which in my opinion is what they deserve.
3. Everything about the band screams conflict. I have more than I know what to do with. Not to mention, the very essence of the film I'm making goes against everything we've seen.
4. Also...the film is not about the fans. I would think the two clips on the site show that. Don't confuse this with the original version of CMO started by Hansi. This is not that film.

To clarify a few things...
When I say the film is not about the "fans," I mean the fans per se...I mean this is not literally ABOUT THE FANS. (We're not following fans around, speaking to their parents, going to their places of employment.) But it is a look at the Mats' myth from the perspective of people who love this band. The fans are telling the story the way they remember it...thus...conflict in that no one remembers anything the same way...no one likes the same songs...no one feels the same about any of the story...ask the same question to ten fans (and I'm including journalists, fellow musicians, etc., in this group) and you get ten different answers.
This is NOT a film about the dark side of the Mats. It's a love story about the greatest band of all time (at least in my humble opinion), as told thru the eyes of those who loved them most.
Again, the clips speak for themselves.

Those clips have me interested. The lighting could have been better but it's very cool regardless.

No offense to anyone, but I find the skepticism above a tad surprising, especially from people on this board. As a long-time lurker (only recently and reluctantly registered)...this is THE PLACE for the obsessed. I would think this group would 'get it' more quickly than any other.
It's all of these threads, conversations, disagreements, rants, hurt feelings, confusions, woulda-coulda-shouldas and enduring mysteries come to life on screen. With editing. And proper syntax.
Best wishes to Gorman for a great film. Can't hardly wait.

Final chance to pre-order DVD. (Sorry, can't get your name in the credits any more, but there are still tons of great backer rewards. Take a look.)
Also...check the CMO Facebook page for hints about the first screenings!

Hmmmm. I see that there was no reply as to the comment about the reason why the Replacements music isn't included in the doc and that it may be due to lack of rights. Makes me think the Mats don't back this project. All of the docs that the director cites as great and I agree with those choices but they ALL HAD MUSIC and footage of the band in them. I honestly would love to see a documentary about the Replacements but I don't think this one is going to satisfy.

Gorman wanted to create a different kind of documentary, and I hope you decide to check it out before dismissing it.

I think the movie can only serve those that are Mats fans already. Doesn't appear to have anything that would attract anyone else. Great that this isn't about the money and is just documenting the memory. That must be why it is called a documenary.

Whatever the film maker was trying to go for, the fact that there wasn't any Replacements music or band participation left a definite hole. Again, the filmmaker said they were going for a particular feel, but you can't tell me that if they were offered an opportunity to have access to the band and their music they wouldn't have jumped at the chance. It felt like the concept of the film was created to fit around the lack of access. It was a noble attempt, but it just didn't appeal to me.

For what it's worth, I took a friend with next to no background on the Replacements and she found it fascinating. I thought it was good, she thought it was great. Unlike other documentaries, you don't get to hear the music...so as a viewer, you don't run it through that lens. It left her curious to hear more. Also, in the interviews, Gorman has said repeatedly that he would not have used music, footage, or even current interviews with ex-members -- even if given the opportunity. Maybe you know more, but I'm inclined to take that at face value. All this said, I think most everyone would enjoy a well-made documentary in the traditional form. It would be great to see the story told in all its glory.
