I'm posting this for Gorman Bechard, who is now working on "Color Me Obsessed" -- take note Mpls folks: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ OK…here's the deal. A movie called COLOR ME OBSESSED was being made by Hansi Oppenheimer about the rabid fans of The Replacements. Things happened, and that film has fallen into my lap… Who am I? My name is Gorman Bechard. I've written 5 novels, including THE SECOND GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD in which God's Daughter proclaims her love for the Mats, sending their CDs to the top of the charts, and having them fill Giant's Stadium. Oh, and she even has a discreet affair with one of the band members. Most recently I've directed the award-winning indie feature YOU ARE ALONE. My new feature is another indie, FRIEND (WITH BENEFITS), that's just being submitted to film festivals now. And yes, I am a rabid Replacements fan. Pretty much everything you need to know about me is on one of these sites: www.GormanBechard.com www.YouAreAlone.com www.FWBmovie.com www.GuyWithTypewriter.com Why am I posting here on Craigslist? Well…I want to shoot a LOT more footage for COLOR ME OBSESSED. I want it to be feature length. I want it to tell the story of the greatest rock band of all time solely through the words of their fans and peers. I'm looking for people to sit down in front of the camera with me for thirty minutes, an hour, however long it'll take, and tell me their Replacements stories. Especially people who knew the band, saw the band, played on the same bill as the band, drank with the band, lived next door, anything and everything…WITH the band members. You get the picture. (You can love them…be indifferent…even hate them.) And what better place to start than Minneapolis? I'm planning to come out there in May, and am just now starting to make a list of whom I should speak with. This is my first posting. So if you're interested in being a part of this documentary, drop me an email: ColorMeObsessed@gmail.com Talk with me on camera. Or suggest someone who should (please have their contact info). Be a part of what could be (will be!) a very cool film about The Replacements. Thank you! P.S. If you know someone who should see this ad, but probably won't…please pass it on. Once again the email: ColorMeObsessed@gmail.com (This is the ONLY contact email for this film.) And we're just starting work on the website, but you can see the poster here: www.ColorMeObsessed.com

Nice to know, was kinda wondering what happened to this... Yeah, I even made a small cash contribution to this project so I'll be looking for some "executive producer" type mention during the credit roll.

Greetings,
Just wanted to say hello...if you know anyone who should (must) see the above post, please pass it on.
If you have suggestions as to whom I should speak with, let me know. (With contact info please.)
But otherwise, that post pretty much says it all.
This should be a fun ride...

I think an idea that may be fun for you to try would be to set up a list of questions, and fans from all across the globe can record themselves answering them via webcam! We Mats fans are quite the eclectic bunch.

We Mats fans are quite the eclectic bunch. Good idea...might be a little nuts in terms of releases. (People would have to include a copy of license/passport along with a signed release for the footage to be useable.) But nothing that couldn't be worked out. My question...where would I post something like that (I guess I could also post a release to be printed out and mailed in with necessary documentation)? Any thoughts...suggestions? I posted the above on CraigsList in Minneapolis...and nothing. Granted...I'm still finishing up Friends (With Benefits) before diving full time into this...but I want to start on contacts... Thanks! Gorman Well, I think the releases could all be posted on your website to be printed off. I'm thinking maybe we could submit all videos online, with all our contact information submitted alongside, that way you can go through them all, and pick & choose which clips would be the best for the documentary, and in turn, contact those people so that they could send in their releases. As far as advertising it for the fans, that's a tough one. This board will generate a lot of submissions by members, and by word of mouth. Perhaps street teams in key areas putting up flyers? There are quite a few Mats fan sites set up around the net as well that are worth looking into!

I agree that if you're coming to mpls there are tons of old guard mats fans who may not populate this board or care to reply to a craig's list ad. So the street team flyer idea seems good -- I'd help. One thought: feature length implies a broader audience and raises the bar for the film not to be as insular and -- I'll say it -- annoying. I'd like to see less "Glory Days" type reminiscences and more documentary how mats fans integrate a long gone band into their lives at this late date.

right, in my mind paul is still doing it, and has been doing it for years. if this tuns out to be a "glory days" thing that'd be too bad
there is at least one die hard mats fan in San Ramon, California.

Please excuse my ignorance as I'm new to the (posting) group, but, this documentary is about the fans and not The Replacements? Like Trekkies? And the fans enthusiasm/obsession? Really?
Please tell me it's more than that. Unless it's not. The last thing we need is more non-information about this band. The oral-history (read: non-linear, random perspectives, not-very detail-oriented, essays) book 'All Over But The Shouting' shed far less light than the outstanding 'Our Band Could Be Your Life' book.
Oh Well, it's all about marketing I suppose.

Hey Guys, Sorry for the long delay here. My new feature just premiered last Friday, and just finished up my 6th novel...so needed to get those things out of the way. First off, yes this is going to be about the Replacements as told thru the eyes of their fans, followers, bands they played with, etc and so on. People who were there, not people who discovered them in 2008. I am firmly of the belief that no great documentary has EVER been done on a band AFTER the band has broken up. I truly can think of none. They all come across like a VH1 special. And that's the last thing I want to do. If someone can suggest one, I'd love to see it. But when I think of great music docs, from Let It Be to Am I Trying To Break Your Heart to The Devil in Daniel Johnston...they were all made while the band/artist was still recording. My goal is this. People believe in God without ever seeing or hearing him/her...this doc will make people believe in the Mats without ever seeing them, or hearing a lick of their music. It will allow them to go out and discover the tunes for themselves. This band is God to many of us. The doc will explain why. So that is what Color Me Obsessed will be... I will be on this board a lot more as I try to figure out a time this summer to visit Minneapolis... Look forward to hearing any and all thoughts, and I will address the above ideas shortly. Thanks! Gorman Bechard P.S. The Premiere of my last flick: stiff.bside.com/2009/films/friendswithbenefits_stiff2009

Just want to add that I chuckle when reading the god-replacements comparison.
Wish you well with the film, and curious to see your latest release after checking out your link.

I just want a true blue Mats DVD already. I have a two disc bootleg DVD called 'The Last Best Band of The 80's' that seems to be about the same thing as 'Seen Your Video' or whatever the hell it's called, but I want the true blue good quality DVD that they deserve!

I concur.
I also have the Last Band Of The 1980's DVD and the market is definitely there for a legitimate DVD release already. But considering the reissues (originally planned to be a box set) was supposedly in the works for ten years or so it's sadly doubtful anyone will get it together to do right by the band in a home video format. Paul's lone DVD-release Come Feel Me Tremble was pretty awful and - stupidly - it was not chaptered. A fan could have pulled together better product - and footage - than that.
I must say I do admire the dedication of your project. Serious kudos are in order. But your argument about a rock doc on a band after-the-fact is a little thin. If you do in fact believe that no good rock doc has taken place after the fact - why wouldn't you at least attempt to break the mold?
Just a few very good examples of great rock documentaries about bands/artists after the fact:
The Beatles Anthology The Beach Boys Endless Harmony New York Doll Let's Get Lost: The Chet Baker Story MC5*: A True Testimonial Standing in the Shadows of Motown We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen End of the Century: The Ramones The Wrecking Crew (this film is a must-see!) and to a lesser extent (largely due to much-interrupted priceless footage): Westway To The World
As a Mats fan since late 1987 (although even if I was fan since late 1997 it really does not matter) and having seen them four times - I'm not so elitist as to not want to bring the bands music to younger fans. I think it makes little sense to want to do that. All a documentary will do is direct their amazing music to those who are so inclined to love it. There's nothing wrong with cinematically presenting the music in one place and getting a would-be-new fan up to speed. There's nothing worse than asking someone why someone thinks something about an artist and they can't present a shred of physical evidence (and in the case of the Mats there are tons of evidence).
I just can't fathom how a documentary about fans who were there and how much the band changed their lives will bring anything to the table and do the band justice. Or what one is expected to walk away with - other than the acknowledgment of a fan's enthusiasm.
The Replacements are a band that even today way too many people unfairly do not know - but they know the name. Fans talking about the band is only going to alienate the non-informed. The last thing this band needs is more fans discussion and no point of reference.
I'm sorry but regardless of how you may (or may not) decide to spin it - this band still needs less non-information about them and more examples - unedited footage and peer testimonials (not fans) - of what was wonderful about them. There's so much untapped drama withing the band itself...and the documentary is about...the fans. Okay.

I think the Come Feel Me Tremble DVD is way cool.I love it.Paul talking about the Mats albums is classic. It's not a documentary about his entire life & career. It's more of a gift from out of nowhere that Paul put together. The DVD not being chaptered to me is just Paul putting his stamp on it. If this Color Me Obsessed captures the rush I felt being a Mats fan I'm all for it.I think that is the point of it. The DVD I want to see is of the professionally shot concert footage in the vaults. Not to mention whatever footage has been captured at First Ave.

Sorry to anyone who doesn't like the way I'm going about the doc. But this is the film I'm making. Instead of trying to copy every other bad band doc made, we're trying something different. It's not going to make everyone happy, but that is not my goal. My goal is to make a film about the greatest band of all time which I am proud to have directed. Hope you come along for the ride...
We're going to start moving on this. (My last feature is finally playing festivals, just handed book #6 in...time is opening up a little.)
If you want to be interviewed for this project, email me at ColorMeObsessed@gmail.com
Soon...
