I think it's more of a song about ending up in "non descript town USA".
I've always felt that was it.. so yeah ProZach..i agree.
oh, and while i have your attention, is Trent Reznor from
Mercer? I know somone who claims he was reared there and the moved to Cleveland.

For what it's worth, I got a t-shirt from the DTAS tour that says "Welcome Funeral Directors" on the front and "We're coming to your Happy Town" on the back reminds me of Welcome Interstate Managers/Fountains of Wayne |

I seem to recall reading somewhere that during the period of ASD, Paul was actually in a marriage that was fallin apart, as well as the band situation, and his decision to quit drinking...
does anyone know if he indeed had a prior marriage, or who his first wife was?..

He was married. I don't know to who & I don't know for how long. He mentioned it in an article many years back.
He says somthing along the lines of how he saw Bob Mould & had him over at his house "when I was still married."

He was married once before -- I'd read this in a spread in Musician magazine, and a few weeks later I was lucky enough to meet him backstage on the DTAS tour -- they were all drunk, natch -- feeling stupid and tongue-tied I congratulated him on getting married, waved at my new bride and said I had just got married. He and Tommy ogled her and Paul says, "Hey, pretty cute" and pretended like he was going to go drink her spit.
So when we met him on the bus steps last summer, for old times sake my wife asked him to sign her boob in a PG-rated spot, but for some reason he didn't remember her ...
forgive me for rambling on in this self-absorbed way ...

Yeah, man, Paul definately was married sometime in the mid eighties. I don't know to whom or any of the details about how long it lasted or whatever.
I had a friend who met Paul and his wife at a mutual friends wedding. My friend was in the wedding band and Paul actually joined them on stage fro a couple numbers´. My friend has this on tape. Paul is wasted, apparently stitting at a table that he hauled up on stage, singing tunes like Cut Across Shorty, mumbling a lot of nosensical shit.
