I was looking through, kind of curious about why 49:00 is not longer for download. It appears that following the tunecore link http://studio.tunecore.com/store/product/47 now links you to download 5:05, the missing 5:05 of paul's album. It seems like it was done afterward (the one song in it has paul singing the five oh five). I am still in my first listen to it, but it's pretty cool.
the song is downloadable for 99 cents, or for $5.05 (if you're feeling generous). I chose the later option, as paul deserves far more for these great works.

That "5:05" song is the best one after "One After 909"

Listening to the lyrics, it makes me wonder if they were forced to take down 49:00 from the web. It seems weird that it was taken down so quickly, and Paul does have lines about "if you wanna sue me" and "they got a lawsuit .. ." etc. I wonder if he was told he couldn't keep it up due to the covers being in there or something. I'm pretty sure most of the clips would fall under fair use, but I don't really know what the rules are about releasing cover songs.
The whole thing seems shrouded in mystery, I wonder if we'll ever know what happened. Personally, I'm just glad I managed to get my copy of 49:00 before it got discontinued.

the lyrics, the "fuk you's" and the Beatles "oh darling" at the end seems to hint at that being the case. I always wondered about him using the covers. Very weird. (must have been Yoko...or someone from Steppenwolf)
I was very suspicious about downloading 5:05; it seemed very shady. Aftergoing to tunecore directly a million different ways, I took the leap. nasty song

The Hitler stuff reminded me of this old tangent from the "Folker interludes lyrics discussion" thread:
Aug 13, 2006, 2:22pm, beth wrote:Ok, I may be really overthinkng this, but here goes:
I hear "Schickleberg in the war", and it resonates in me as a reflection of the things that haunted his father throughout his life. I hear it as a Hitler reference. Schicklegruber was Hitler's mother's name, and "alternate" histories often refer to Hitler as Schicklegruber. "Schickleberg" works better rhythmically, and feels to me like it's in line with the way Paul often reworks words to suit his purposes.
So the way that I hear the whole list is:
No jingle in his pockets Schickleberg in the war Father went to end, knockin' on Heaven's door Fell in love with a dyke Married a friend Spent half his life wondering if it would end It would end
Coming at the end of 23 Years Ago, this sounds like a list of things that haunt a person throughout their life, the first two being Paul's father's demons, a childhood during the depression and the experience of the second world war.
Then we get to Paul dealing with his father's death, and looking at his own demons.

Or Paul might be doing a mashup between Schicklgruber and Westerberg (a la "WASterberg"). If the last word in the line is "wall" and not "war," then there's the fact that Hitler's grandmother Maria Anna Schicklgruber Hitler was given an honor grave along a church wall in Austria in 1938.
It does seem farfetched, but then a WWII reference and this interlude's "father" line would tie into the themes of "Pine Box" and "My Dad" (which even has that line about "the family name"). |

After the ridiculously cheap 49:00, I was happy to be able to pay $5.05 for this .
This definitely feels like a reaction to something that must have happened regarding the 49:00 release. I guess some copyright holders took issue with the song medley .
Maybe for Paul's next release he can do a nice medley of He's So Fine/My Sweet Lord .

Shades of "EMI" and "Complete Control" on this one. So who's the most likely plaintiff? Paul Simon? Elton John? Whoever owns the Partridge Family rights? I suppose the Beatles, since he ends with Oh Darling. I recall Chuck Berry wouldn't let PW include a cover in the CFMT movie. Tony Hatch has a song called "7:10 from Suburbia" .... for once nothing like PW's

that's just hilarious. pretty apparent what happened & why 49:00 was pulled from Amazon... wonder if we'll ever get the entire story as to what happened & who complained/threatened to sue.
I also ponied up the 5 bucks. why not?

anyone else notice that the Hitler speech and the ensuing "analysis" sounds like it's from an episode of South Park? Wonder if Paul got permission from Trey & Matt...

I thought it sounded familiar, and a friend of mine mentioned it to me earlier that she thought it was someone from southpark, which would make sense to me. I'd hope there's permission for it, but who knows. I'm kind of surprised he may have gotten in trouble for the medly as most of the songs were so short (although I think I love you would likely need permission, as so much of it is included). It's kind of silly that anyone would make a big deal from it. It's not like paul is making tons of money, and he's turning their songs into something completely different in 49:00.
I'm just glad to have my copy though.

I don't think 49:00's low price point helped matters. I bet it must have pissed off a few industry types worried about the precedence it was setting. Threats of copyright infringement was probably the easiest way to attack and get rid of the record.
I'm sure this whole thing has pretty much killed the possibility of seeing 49:00 re-released in its original form, and I'm not sure Paul would feel right about releasing it without the medley. Thankfully most of us fans got it while we could.

I just found a reference to the Hitler quote here: http://www.markprindle.com/mount.htm
an album of indecipherable Hitler speeches ("That was the sound of Adolf Hitler, the most ferocious dictator that the world has ever known!")
Maybe it wasn't South Park after all.
