So this thing aired at like 1:oo, right? 5 hours later, it's posted. 2 minutes later, it's on my 'pod. 10 minutes later I'm blasting it in my car. 30 seconds later, I'm singing along. We live in amazing times

I get the distinct impression that this was all staged, including Rome getting so pissed about it. Too much of a stereotypical "'mats-like thing" here... blowing off a national interview, granted by arguably PW's most powerful fan in the media.
In fact, Rome is such a huge fan that I wouldn't be surprised if he thought up the idea. If not, I could easily see him getting excited about becoming part of 'mats lore - the big anti-reunion, big-show blowoff.
I dunno. It's kinda like those TWO "oops, the tape just ran out" moments on Stereo. Were both of them legit? I can see it happening once... but twice?
Or some of the "forgotten" lyric episodes from the S/M and Folker tours. Listen to enough of the weeds and you can tell when he's truly forgotten the words and when he's just playing to the crowd.
End of story - Paul's a performer, and he's very good at putting on a show. It's just that it seems like he's realized/decided that his best "show" is playing the role of the lovable loser - the guy who fvcks things up enough just enough to prevent stardom, but has moments of brilliance that let you realize he is capable of more.
All of this just seems like it's the most recent "I'm a punk-rocker and we do irrational things like this" moment...

My chance to listen to this was spotty at best due to a crazy work day - so Thanks Pline!

I'm starting to suspect that what people say on the internet may not, in fact, be one hundred percent reliable. |

From Pitchfork:
The Replacements: "Message to the Boys"
It's the first new Replacements song in 16 years, but you probably missed its world premiere on knucklehead jock/Mats fanatic Jim Rome's radio show yesterday. The odd unveiling followed their fuck-it-all, bittersweet career trajectory perfectly with Paul Westerberg blowing-off an accompanying live interview with Tommy Stinson; these guys can't win. As the faithful bassist stumbled through the same questions he's spent 16 years trying to erase (answering the inevitable reunion tour query with an exasperated "I don't know"), he noticeably perked up when talk turned away from the Mats' murky future to Los Angeles basketball. Original members Westerberg, Stinson, and Chris Mars (who contributes back-up vocals)-- along with hired stickman Josh Freese-- recorded two new tracks late last year as part of an upcoming greatest hits package, but hopes for a full-fledged Mats reunion seem foolhardy, as this song subtly attests.
Rather than a new beginning, "Message to the Boys" works best as loyal farewell. Reminiscent of three-chord struts like Tim's "Hold My Life" and "Little Mascara", this is vintage mid-era Mats-- in between the early gutter punk and the late maudlin mopes. Westerberg's booze-bard lyrics are characteristic to the point of self-mythological as he begins, "Well, I met her in a bar/ Like I always say." His lost love's doomed existence as a roaming runaway who's missed but not forgotten delicately doubles as a keen Replacements allegory. "Yeah, I miss her and her voice," sings Westerberg. The Mats are dead. Long live the Mats. [Ryan Dombal]

Well, as somebody who has listened to Rome for almost a decade, that could have gone a whole lot better. Rome loves to talk about Paul crushing him at a show in 87' in LA on which was better, Tim or PTMM. It was cool Tommy showed up. But with Paul not showing, well, does it really surprise anyone? I think the some of Rome's listeners do not get it, but I am certain Rome does and he kind of said so. It reminds me of a quote I read from Paul once in an interview about why the band never got all that much air play and their dislike of record and radio A&R people, "Talk about bitting the hand, we tore off the arm".
The single was pretty good.

Listening to the song again, it seems like they couldn't quite figure out to end it. Kind of just fizzles out.

Agreed, I kinda start to lose interest near the end. Still a very good song imo. Is he singing "she was wearin that VEST with nothing underneath"? My mental image of a woman in a vest is not a pretty one. I'll just pretend he's singing "dress" instead...lol. I'm really feelin the clip for "Pool & Dive".

Yea... at first I was hearing CFMT outtake...but, the more I listen it seems to have potential...Wouldn't it be weird if it actually became a big hit?

Good idea. When I listen, this is what I think:
Leave it to Paul to turn things on their head. "Message to the Boys" sounds like a message to a girl to me.
Oh God, I miss him, and his voice....
