The announcement about the new covers EP inspired Consequence of Sound to post 11 Top Covers by Paul Westerberg and the ReplacementsSeems fine, a few quibbles: I think I still prefer Paul's radio performance of These Days. And I have no idea what point they're getting at about Greg Kihn and Another Girl. The Mats were playing it long before but didn't release it until, what ... Don't Buy or Sell? Doesn't really seem like it was a race with Greg Kihn.

Live and Inconcerated.
OK list. I do like me sum "Taking Care of Business". But I'll take "Gudbuy T'Jane" over "Black Diamond" any day. I'd also argue for "Jungle Rock".
And never underestimate the charm of "If I Only Hand a Brain" by the Mats/Roadies.

I too could do without the BTO cover, but Black Diamond belongs on there because a) it's a brilliant, serious, realized interpretation, b) it was the only cover they ever released on a proper record (other than B-sides, extras or rarities) and c) without it I probably would have never become a fan. I'd argue for Left in the Dark, Baby Strange or maybe even Cruella Deville over some of those choices, but love that Temptation Eyes is on there.

Found a YouTube video of Paul covering David Bowie's "John, I'm Only Dancing" once...I think it was from the "Eventually" tour...Pretty kickass...There was also an audio only clip of the Mats doing "Rebel, Rebel" that would have been really great, but seemed like they weren't too sure of the chords leading into the little turnaround that leads from the verse to the chorus...

Oh, yeah, "Daydream Believer", also from the "Eventually" tour...

is this the one you were thinking of? Yes, I believe so, but there was one with an actual sort of cell phone-type video...

Oh, yeah, "Daydream Believer", also from the "Eventually" tour... That's the first one that came to mind as far as PW solo. He did a great version. Also, "Whole Wide World" by Wreckless Eric....

Just as a side note, if you don't have the whole "Fantasy Studios" KFOG show that John I'm Only Dancing comes from, then you have to get it immediately. Along with A Lot of Songs Not For Sale, it's the best live solo boot available. His KFOG performance of Left of the Dial is mindblowing.

Happy to finally join the forum. Isn't there any love for Hitchin' A Ride, the classic by Vanity Fair? A killer live staple in the 80s.

A little off-topic but the Mats' "Hitchin'" seems a likely inspiration for Deer Tick's "Born at Zero" (off their latest release, the "Tim" EP)

Hey everyone. Glad you appreciated the list. I had fun putting it together.
I wanted to clarify: I wasn't trying to say they were in any race with Kihn, just that the two were playing it around and the same time, and their cover ultimately turned out better.
Thanks for reading, folks!
