There's a station in the Detroit area (93.9) that plays the 'Mats (and very occasionally Paul's solo work) in addition to bands like the Psychedelic Furs on a fairly regular basis. I've heard Alex Chilton, I'll Be You, I Will Dare, Hold My Life, and possibly a few others. I think I heard Waiting for Somebody one evening, too. It scared me the first few times, but it's apparently a fairly regular occurrence. I don't know what it would've been like if these songs had been hits, but it really is nice to hear them on the airwaves at least on occasion.

I cannot understand why "I will dare", "On the bus", "Dyslexic Heart" & "Ain't got me" weren't big hits.

I recall "Love Untold" being played fairly regularly here in ATL on 99X when it came out. I also remember them mentioning Paul's 40th birthday on 12.31.99, calling him a "bastard of old".
The Mats best bet for stardom may have been to pursue the punk-rock-cowboy theme, ala "Achin' to Be", "If Only You Were Lonely", "Nobody", and many others. A lot of PW's solo material follows that path as well, like "Two Days til Tomorrow". A band I used to work with a lot, Dash Rip Rock, from New Orleans, were big Mats fans and played this angle to the hilt, albeit in a more crude fashion. I can't picture Paul singing "Pu#$y-Whipped" or "Let's Go Smoke Some Pot"...or can I?

I agree with your and other's thoughts on certain songs;, I don't understand how these songs were not "radio friendly". I'm not a huge fan of Dyslexic Heart but I thought it was catchy enough of a tune for radio. I guess to be fair, it did get some air play in certain markets.
But will there be a younger generation that will catch on to the Mats and Paul? Will there be a renaissance for them, a new surge of interest in them from a younger audience? And more importantly, should I even try to get my rock station (94.7 The Globe) to play more Paul and the Mats? Would they even have any of their music in the station's library to play?

I'm with Cathy, especially on "Ain't Got Me." One of my fave PW songs. Irresistably catchy.

I'm really suprised "Can't Hardly Wait" wasn't a huge hit. It has strings and horns. Catchy as hell. It has not one, but two of the "clearwater pauses" as they're called in some circles. In Jacob Slicther's (drummer for semisonic) book, he basically atributes the sucess of "closing time" on the the pause alone. The drum roles are catchy as hell. "Can't hardly Wait" is one of the songs that really got me into the 'mats, so maybe I'm over analyzing here.
If I had one reason it wasn't a hit and after thinking about it, it's probably a good reason is the chorus doesn't really kick in until midway through the song.

Ya know, I still haven't emailed that one dj at that radio station yet to ask him to play some Paul or MAts.
And I was thinking about this listening to Achin' To Be this morning on the way into work: Why the hell wasn't this a bigger hit? It sure was radio friendly, had a good melody, and a poignancy in the lyrics.
Then I thought about the video they did for the song and it hit me: the record label guys were just idiots. The video was non-sensical and too abstract for it to be meaningful to anyone, the video lost the poignancy the song had---I mean, what's with the girl running around from place to place???!!! And really, the record label just didn't do the right things for them, you basically had a bunch of MBA types at the label he don't know shit about music and tried to mold the band into something they weren't.

Well, I finallly did it. I emailed that one DJ and asked him if it were possible to push the envelope of their playlists and include the Mats or Paul. I even asked him about playing the stuff because Rhino Records was due to re-issue the Mats stuff. Anyway, here is the blow off response I got:
