As tipped yesterday (March 28) on Billboard's Jaded Insider blog, Replacements members Paul Westerberg, Tommy Stinson and Chris Mars have reunited to record two new songs for an upcoming retrospective, "Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?: The Best of the Replacements." Due June 13 via Rhino, the set will feature "Message to the Boys" and "Pool & Dive," the band's first new recordings in 16 years. Session drummer Josh Freese was behind the kit for the new recordings, while Mars, who in recent years has foregone music for an art career, contributed backing vocals. The songs were written by Westerberg and were recorded at producer Ed Ackerson's Flowers studio in Minneapolis. At deadline, it is unclear if any further activity is brewing within the Replacements' camp. Westerberg told Billboard.com in 2005 that he still reflects fondly on the Replacements' early days, especially "when we were riding in the van and we ripped the seats out and would just listen to tapes and listen to Black Flag. [We would] sort of slam dance and stuff around in the back of the van and be drinking hard liquor at noon and it was just, you know, carefree times. We didn't give a damn." Westerberg also said he tried to reunite the Replacements for an October 2004 benefit concert for Soul Asylum's Karl Mueller, who later died of cancer. "I didn't call the guys myself," he admitted. "One of our old roadie pals came over who owns a bar now and runs a club and was asking if I would do a benefit for Karl and I said, 'See if the boys want to play.' And he kind of went around and got various answers and it didn't come back real strong like, 'Hey let's do it.' And I felt like that was the opportunity, that was the chance and we just missed it. "Now I say, there's probably no chance we'll get back together again," he said, without pinpointing which of his former colleagues were not interested. "It bothered me for like an afternoon," he laughed. "But, it did bother me for that long because I was secretly excited and some of them weren't." Meanwhile, sources say the long-awaited Replacements boxed set is still in the planning stages and will not be out until 2007 at the earliest. Rhino is also working on expanded editions of the Replacements' albums, but no release date has yet been announced for those packages either. Here is the track list for “Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?”: "Takin a Ride" "Shiftless When Idle" "Kids Don't Follow" "Color Me Impressed" "Within Your Reach" "I Will Dare" "Answering Machine" "Unsatisfied" "Here Comes a Regular" "Kiss Me on the Bus" "Bastards of Young" "Left of the Dial" "Alex Chilton" "Skyway" "Can't Hardly Wait" "Achin' To Be" "I'll Be You" "Merry Go Round" "Message to the Boys" "Pool & Dive"

Two new songs is great news. And in spite of any further reunion appearing unlikely at this point, the mere fact that they're willing to be in the same room at the same time is a really good sign...

"Message to the Boys" - can there possibly be any other that would cause greater anticipation?

"Message to the Boys" - can there possibly be any other that would cause greater anticipation? Lyrics trivia: has the word "boys" appeared in a PW/Mats song since "Gimme Noise"?

In old interviews, Slim always seemed to be really appreciative of being in the Mats and being able to play Paul's songs. Despite him being very humble and grateful in some respects, I still wonder if maybe he wished he'd have gotten the call.

This was on my Adelphia.com home page:
'Mats Get Back Together to Record Thursday, March 30, 2006 3:29 PM EST The Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — It's a 'Mats fan's dream come true — new songs from The Replacements.
The surviving original members of the Minneapolis '80s group have reunited to record two new songs for a best-of CD, according to news reports.
Singer-guitarist Paul Westerberg, bassist Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars were recently in the studio to record several tracks, the Star Tribune and the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.
Westerberg wrote both songs: "Message to the Boys" and "Pool & Dive." Mars sang backup while a session drummer handled the drumming.
It's the first The Replacements — known as the `Mats to fans — have recorded together since disbanding in 1991.
Original guitarist Bob Stinson, Tommy's older brother, died in 1995. His replacement, Slim Dunlap, wasn't asked to play on the sessions, but said he never expected a call.
"It's really neat they put aside their little squabbles and did it," Dunlap told the Star Tribune.
Rhino Records is releasing the 20-cut best-of CD, "Don't You Know Who I Think I Was? The Best of The Replacements," due in stores June 13.

i remember in a interview back when paul was trying to pull off the last leg of the buddy holly tour, for the grandpaboy record, with the mats...slim said he didnt think it would be good, and what if no one came out....to which paul talked about how it made him so dpressed he couldn't even return a call to slim, cause he wouldn't even take the chance..>>>>> i think thats were some rift began with them.,....but at their heart, slim really wasnt needed, pauls got the guitar duties down brothers and sisters

Despite him being very humble and grateful in some respects, I still wonder if maybe he wished he'd have gotten the call. yeah, I wonder the same. Slim spent 5-or-so years of his life in this band, and he wasn't invited for the quasi-reunion. If that were me, I'd be a little down about that regardless of any humbleness or gratitude. It seems a bit like his role is being downplayed, if not ignored. In any case, the compilation (and especially the new tracks!) is great news. I'm excited.

I think I remember a Paul quote where he stated that he thought in retrospect that he and Tommy were the best guitar players to ever play in the Replacements. Is claiming that the bass player was a better guitar player than the 2 lead guitarists considered a "dis" in MPLS? They didn't call Steve Foley either did they? A lot of my favorite Paul solo tunes are the ones Josh played on..."the cat riles me".

Its so crazy to make a comment like this since I didn't know the guy, obviously but...
Flipping the finger on Slim is like kicking your favorite uncle in the n*ts for no reason if you ask me.
Slim seems like such a nice guy and has a lot of talent.

Slim seems like such a nice guy and has a lot of talent. He is a very nice guy from all accounts and he definitely has a lot of talent if you ever listen to his playing. He can go from Van Halen to the Replacements to the Dead Boys to Roy Acuff faster than anyone. I wasn't meaning to put him down. If anything, he deserves a lot of credit for convincing Paul to put Valentine on PTMM. And a lot of my favorite Mats songs come from the 2 albums he played on. Or was it 3? I'm still not convinced he didn't play the guitar solo on Shooting Dirty Pool... He could still play with them on the reunion tour though, right?
